I'm currently looking for an external 2.5 inch hard drive with eSATA and USB that isn't too pricy, has good performance and works fine with my E6400.

It seems when it comes to 2.5'' external drives, eSATA isn't very widespread yet. I only happened to find the Conceptronic Grab'n'Go 250 GB which - according to the fery few tests for external drives with eSATA I could find - works quite fast.

Another possibility would be to buy case and hard drive separately, but I'm even less sure what to pick here.

Do you have any recommendations or experience regarding 2.5'' external hard drives with eSATA?

I can recommend the Revoltec Alu Guard 2,5'' eSATA case with JMicron chipset. It's hot swappable with AHCI mode & costs around 20 € (incl. eSATA cable) in Germany. With the OEM 160 GB Hitachi 5.400, I get a transfer rate of 63 MB/s. Before I tested a case with a different chipset from the German mail order Pearl which prevented my E6400 from booting.

E-Sata is wide spread its just that USB is more so.

Your much better off getting the two separate IMO, as the general market is still marking e-sata pre-builts as "high end" and they cost much more than the same HDD with just USB, but the 3rd party enclosures the difference is maybe $10.

Infact the interfaces is the main factor in determining cost in the pre-builts excecpt for the size of the HDD.

Also if you buy the HDD separate it probably will have a longer warrenty.

I can recommend the Western Digital 500GB Blue :p

If you go into a online store like Newegg.com there are tons of good low cost enclosures with E-Sata. If you go into your local super electronics store though, thats when you can expect the picking to be slim and if you do find anything the cost will be extravagant.

Since your in Germany though I really have no idea in what direction to point you in for shopping. However send me some beer and maybe we can trade :p

I read a very positive review of a Plextor 2.5" disk with sSATA a while back. It was reasonably priced.
