    Hey,

I'm about to order the Acer AS8940G laptop. I do video production and need to back up files often. Also I'd like to have the option to burn out HD on Blu-Ray. The 8940G doesn't come with a Blu-Ray burner, but I've been looking at some Panasonic UJ-220 drives that have been converted to USB on ebay. Would these work with the 8940G?

    Thanks

Well since I got jipped on ebay I wouldn't truth them as far as i could throw them (actually one in four, but I'm still pissed they don't do more to get rid of disreputable vendor.)

In any event, I'm in the same market, and so far I'm swayed towards Panasonic. The price on the one you're looking at seems very cheap?

I've done a lot of ebaying myself and have only gotten burned a very small percentage...and compared to the money I've saved by shopping on ebay, it's been nothing.

Regardless of where purchased, do you think the Panasonic UJ-220 in an external case will work with the Acer over USB? Are there special drivers needed to use it externally vs internally?

it will work fine. Windows 7 will automatically install the appropriate (generic) drivers for you.

just make sure that you have officially signed drivers (ie. WHQL-certified Nvidia drivers, for example) for your graphics card + appropriate Blu-ray playback software (eg. Cyberlink PowerDVD9 or Arcsoft Totalmedia Theatre) if you ever want to watch BR movies.

Most USB BD-RW drives I've seen are at least $250. Not to mention I'm having a hard time finding a (reputable) source online to buy an internal UJ-220 from.

I'd be a bit skeptical myself.
