I'm pretty new to PC's (I've owned/used them for years, but inexperienced when it comes to most PC related topics). Anyway I just purchased an Alienware M11X, so I was wondering which external CD/DVD drive would be needed to load games (I'm planning on using Steam for most downloads, but some of the games are ridiculously over-priced compared to buying it off of amazon/etc) and software (like Microsoft Office, anti-virus)? I saw this at Best Buy, not sure if that would work.

    http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Toshiba...&skuId=9385024&st=external cd drive&cp=1&lp=1

I'm open to any suggestions, not sure that is even a good deal or not.

    Thanks!

I highly recommend the Asus External SKU 9361497. (Links to BestBuy don't work)

On sale for $59.99 this week and they are offering free shipping. If buying online don't forget 5% Bing cashback.

If buying in-store, pick up a 10% movers coupon from your post office and save some cash that way.

Sweet thanks! Yah I might order that tonight, plus it is 10 dollars cheaper than the Toshiba I was looking at.

I've had a few, and there's some I could recommend. These are from Amazon, but you could find them at Newegg as well.

LG Slim DVD-RW drive, I had that while in Turkey, a very solid external drive.

Currently I have the Sony DRX-S70U-W and HP DVD 556s, and both have been reliable.

I had the Plextor external drive, it was very fast but died in just under a month. Probably just a fluke. Hope these might help. :)

Thanks for all the suggestions! I ended buying the Asus one from Best Buy.

    On a side note:

Slim ones often run off the USB - they are hence slower but great for travelling.

External dives with a dedicated power supply are larger and tend to be faster.
