    2) LG GSA-5163D (IEEE 1394 / USB 2.0) $87.00
    3) LITE-ON SOHW-1693SX (USB 2.0) $89.99

Sony drives are made by LiteOn. It is probably a little cheaper to buy a case and a drive separately. One drive I would recommend is the BenQ DW1640. It is a very good burner. Good Luck.

Lite-ons are a piece of junk. I've never had one that lasted for more than 8 months, and the burn quality isn't so great.

BenQ makes a good drive - and I've always been fond of LG.

HP external drives get good reviews - you might check this one out.

LGs are picky on media and don't overburn, burning discs at over there rated speed like burning a 8x discs at 12 or 16x, very well. The burn quality on the LGs is pretty decent though. The DVD-RAM on LGs is nice for backups. I'd also recommend a firewire case if you have it as firewire tends to be a litte more stable than USB 2.

I ordered that LG a day and a half ago. We'll see how it works. The outcome looks good.

I have the plextors. My first one was the 708uf { I think) I probably backed up 5000 movies with it [ no kidding I used to own a video store }. I noticed after that, it was a little slower reading the blank disc. After reading the manual Plextor states it has a life expectency of x amount of hours. A friend of mine bought it of me and it is still going strong. I now own the 712uf, and the 716uf which writes dual layer. I have been extremely satisfied with the quality of these burners. Mostly I burn at 4x off a hard disc image {very important cuts down on jitter } and have had very little coaster making.
