So I decided against ordering a Thinkpad DVD-DL burner due to not wanting to pay $150 and I heard laptop DVD burners (especially the 9.5mm slim ones) are not close to the quality of desktop ones.
So I went with this setup:

    and this enclosure

Gonna connect it via firewire for max transfer rates. Really happy about the Lightscribe support, something no Thinkpad drive I could find would do.

Of course, most of the 5.25" ones are.

    Two things to consider:

    1) External slim DVD burners do exist that use a laptop drive instead of a clunky desktop drive. Sony, Pioneer, LG, etc. make them.

    2) USB2.0 is as fast as Firewire in the real world and as a bonus can power up a slim DVD burner--meaning you don't need to carry around a separate power supply.

    Speaking of which: LG's GSA-E50N

And those slim DVD burners are the same thing that I'm avoiding, a laptop DVD drive. Those crazies over at CDfreaks.com swear by the big drives and recommended the firewire, and most claim that USB2.0 is not as fast.
