I’m looking to increase the speed at which a can burn DVD’s. Are External usb 2.0 or firewire drives much faster than my stock internal drive in my Hp Pavilion 9500t? I would also have to consider that if I had that external drive I could burn directly to the external drive from my laptop whereas before I would have to burn a copy to the hard drive then insert a blank DVD then make a copy. Can it work like that? Or would it still take two steps?

yes, it can work like that. It can be faster (up to 20x burn speeds depending on the media) and the 5.25" drives tend to have better burn quality than the internal laptop drives. I always use an external drive to burn with when possible.

Yes, you can do a direct copy, but I wouldn't. Buffer under runs are far too common doing that. I use ImgBurn to copy DVDs and go through an intermediate (ISO) file.
