Just checking to see if this is compatible or a good external harddrive for my laptop? Gonna be using it to store music and videos so I can easily plug it into my laptop and vise versa to my desktop.

Amazon.com: Western Digital My Passport 1 TB USB 3.0 Portable Hard Drive - WDBBEP0010BBK-NESN (Black): Computers & Accessories

I'm open to suggestions and recommendations incase this is not compatible or if there is a better one you guys recommend for my laptop, specs on the bottom. Thanks in advance for your help.

Rule #1: USB is USB is USB. In short, any USB device will be compatible with any computer provided there is a driver and USB port for it. Since for external storage like external drives, that driver is built in every OS currently available on the market, yes it will be compatible.

You might need two USB ports to power the drive (never actually needed two personally), but that's it. It will be plug and play.

It sin't gonna be easy to beat that price with a DIY given the current HDD pricing. I'd look for an external with an aluminum casing if you plan to use the drive for extended periods of time though.

I own this drive. It requires 1 usb 2.0 or 3.0 to power up. I haven't tried on a USB 1.0 yet...

It does well with USB 3.0@ about 80 MB/s transfers~.
I prefer sticking with WD, a bit faster service.

With no doubt I can say that it is very reliable. WD are doing very well the last few years.

Honestly, given the drives manufacturers usually put for externals, the interface used to hook the drive to the laptop will be the bottleneck in most operations. I rarely see externals packing higher end drives although in the case of that drive, you can be sure it's the caviar blue 1TB.

My only concern is the lack of rubber ends on these portable HDD. By virtue of their portability they take a beating and can easily slid off desks and tables if you're not careful. Don't think I'll be buying anymore without some kind of rubber stay or at least the option to purchase them afterwards.

I second Krane and would recommend getting something to put on the bottom for traction. I'm sure 3M makes something you could get for $5 and stick on the bottom. Would certainly make me feel much safer on a train or plane.
