Hello,
Noob question here, I have never owned an external HD before.
So my laptop has an e-sata connection - so I thought about getting one of these - Seagate 320GB FreeAgent Pro External Hard Drive, Firewire 400 + USB2.0 / eSATA
My question is, for e-sata HD's is it possible to run games off of the HD and get the same performance just like I ran it off my notebooks 5400RPM HD? Are external HD's like the one above meant to be used just like an internal HD? Or is it simply just for back ups and stuff?
I would like to put clear up my internal HD and dump all my games and music on the external HD and then run them off the external HD using either the e-sata or firewire connections. Is that ok?
Thanks!

eSata drives are just about as fast as an internal drive, so yes you could install many programs there.
For program installs or backups...either would be fine. The PC treats it as another hard drive and no different. You just cannot boot from it most likely.
I don't see anything wrong with what you are proposing at all! -
I put my music and videos on my external hard drive (WD 160gb 2.5"), and it's not even eSATA. Running it off the USB. Just watched Rainman yesterday and didn't pause once.

I was wondering the exact thing, I am wondering if anyone has run games from an external HD and what kind of lag, if any they expereinced

I run music and videos off my external HD's whether it be my WD Passport or Seagate FreeAgent (both using USB) and never had issues. Running applications and games might be another scenario though.
