I'll suggest the Hitachi of making your own if you're in a DIY mood.

Why the Hitachi, because I am partial to Hitachi drives which have been pretty good to me performance and noise wise.
Regarding the "extras" that WD offers, I have never used any extras provided with a drive or computer always preferring my own solutions. They may be worth it to you though.

I second this. Don't buy a particular hard drive for utilities - there are other free programs to be had that let you do the same things without treating you like a moron.

I can't speak for the WD utilities, so if someone who has extensive experience with them can chime in, it would be nice. However, my overall experience with similar features is that they are often bloated or poorly written. If you are lucky they will be a rebranded good commercial utility like some cloning tools are rebranded acronis.

If you are going to buy your own case/enclosure, then get the hitachi 1tb drive and make sure it's the 7200rpm version. Otherwise, go for the cheapest 1tb drive you can get, and get two of them. Always make a backup of your backup.
