Well I am currently in canada with my japanese vostro 1500, and going back soon. But I have been looking at external hard drives seeing as I fill up the stock 120gb 5400rpm very quickly.
I am thinking about buying a hard drive enclosure (preferably 4 bays) and stick One 1TB in it for now, then add more later with raid ( i think raid 0) so they are acting as one hard drive.
The issue is that the volage is 100V in japan while in Canada/USA it is 110V also the plug is similar but the 2 prongs are the same size instead of one being wider.
So what shall I do?
Buy enclosure in japan and buy a hard drive here?(would it work)
Buy it all here?
Buy it all there?
Thanks

There are voltage adapters here and there for both ways... Where ever you can get the hard drives and enclosures cheapest is where i would recommend you get them.

hmm voltage adapters = fire if they need to be on all the time. I could get it cheaper here but SUGGESTIONS would also be nice

I really wouldn't run 4 hard disks on RAID-0. If one goes, you've lost all your data. I was very grateful to my RAID-5 array when one of my hard disks malfunctioned, I didn't lose any data. It's also easier to migrate to a larger capacity (I think).
I also really, really wouldn't store 1TB of data on one hard disk (one of the reasons why I never buy above 500GB hard disks) for the same reason really. You're never going to backup 1TB of data on a regular data - who can be bothered? I'd buy 2/3 hard disks and configure them with RAID-5 to get the data or buy a NAS and access via ethernet - it's much faster than USB anyways. -
Im planning on just tossing music/videos/photoshop files/school files on there instead of on my laptop ( which is full of programs 100gb ful to be exact)

OK.... but just make sure that if you do stick it on one hard disk that you back up all your important stuff in one way or another, or you just store files on it you don't mind losing.
I admit that it's not particularly likely to fail in the modern age, but it is quite possible. -
any ideas on the last bit of my question
any models recommended ( HD, enclosures, combo?)

If you just want an external hard disk then why not get one of these. It's a TB and may suffice:

Also, I like seagates. This sort of thing would make a nice hard disk enclosure as well.

But if you do want to set up RAID, then may I just re-suggest getting a NAS due to the faster write speeds, server capabilities and also been able to access your files more easily from elsewhere. -
Thanks for links, very helpful

No probs! Just let me know if you need anything else.
