If you have HDMI 1.3 or higher, the monitor will work though HDMI... but you may need to hack the EDID (I'd read that the monitor's max resolution over HDMI without hacking EDID is 1920x1080).
Regarding VGA... in theory it can go as high as heaven, but it will depend on your DAC clock (ramdac), refresh rate, cable used, etc.
Alternatively, you may use a HDMI to dual-link DVI and that should work properly, I think.

So what you're saying is, I shoud buy a HDMI-dual link DVI transformer and connect it to the monitor? Will this affect the image quality? Should I buy a laptop that has DisplayPort ?

VGA will give you a great high quality picture over short distances. and in side by side comparisons you can't tell them apart.

The simplest thing to do would be to try the VGA first. But as you say, adapting the DP would bring your ports up-to-date. DVI dual link or otherwise is obsolete.

HDMI - Dual link DVI adapter will likely not help you out any more than an HDMI to HDMI connection will.
If the signal originates from HDMI then there are only 3 TMDS pairs.. Dual link DVI has 6 pairs which allows the higher resolutions.
An HDMI to DVI adapter isn't going to magically create another 3 channels.. of course if DELL had their act together they could allow this monitor to receive WQHD resolution over HDMI by implementing current standards but they just don't support it .
If WQHD resolution is more important to you than getting that specific monitor, have a look at the ASUS PB278Q It is PLS so has a different panel to the DELL but natively supports WQHD resolutions over HDMI - that is, so long as your laptop supports it too.

Dell has its share of fails, but this is not one of them. In fact, they should be give accolades for helping to develop and implement the most advanced and easily adaptable port of its kind ever -- DP.

In this case, it is the standard that lacks implementation of the higher resolution that is holding things behind. OP simple needs to get a monitor equipped HDMI 1.4 to bring things up to par.

Success with 2560x1440 on U2713HM; YMMV 40hz Refresh

I would personally go with something that has an EDID that actually will list the native resolution and have enough bandwidth to do it at 60hz+.I am really having a hard time finding a replacement for my E6410 that will run my U3011. There are lots of nice light new machines but barely anything with displayport. It is really getting to me how they can put both VGA and HDMI but not display port on so many new devices.

Thank you for your help :D Because there's no way to connect the u2713hm to my laptop, I'm probably getting the Asus PB278Q...

That's because they don't know any better. Its up to us to get them to move into the 21st century. Only buy computers with DP, and so no to the also rans.
What do you mean there's no way to connect it. VGA can do it.
