Hi, I'm in the market for an external monitor to complement my Latitude E6400. It will be in use primarily at home or in a dorm room. It can't be too large because I plan on taking it home for summer breaks (on the plane). 19" seems like a good compromise between portability and screen real estate (opinions?). I will be using it for work, audio editing and mixing, and movies/TV. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

24" monitors cost under $200 these days. Why not buy one for home and one for the dorm?

whats your E6400's native resolution? best to get an external monitor that has the same native resolution as your notebook. any LCD's from Samsung or LG is an excellent choice. if your on a budget, Acer's makes nice, competitively priced LCD's as well.

    Why, may I ask? 1440 x 900.

    Still to expensive for me.

    Thanks for the replies

There is no technical reason why you need to get a monitor that has the same resolution. Preference only.

All the good 24" monitors are IPS or PVA panels, the cheap ones are TN. Definitely make sure you check out the monitor before you buy it if you know it could be a TN monitor.

You might want to check out the 1680x1050 22" monitors. I know the Dell 2209WA (Dell is currently out of stock) was $279 at retail but it could often be purchased for $215. e-IPS screen is awesome.

But it sounds like you are going to be severely budget limited here. You might have to settle for a 17-19" widescreen TN monitor.

i have a 24" TN panel monitor, and as someone who has no experience with one of the IPS or PVA screens, i love it. the viewing angles are not the best, but when i use a computer i sit right in front of it lol.

Good TN screens do actually exist...somewhere...out there in the wild.

I tend to avoid TN for me for various reasons. But that's me...not you...not the OP.

Does anyone happen to know if something this size could be taken on an airplane as a carry-on somehow?

    Thanks

P.S. any chance we could move this thread back to aftermarket upgrades?
