Just got my Dell 2007WFP today - great screen (got an S-IPS panel!). I am hooking it up to my Acer 5021 with ATI X700 128MB via VGA.

Whilst randomly fiddling with resolutions, I managed to get the 1680x1050 resolution and it looked great, but after restarting windows, the resolution disappeared from the control panel. I have fiddled with every setting imagineable and it won't come back. I have searched the Dell "driver" CD but no drivers to be found.

Also, is there anyway for the display to automatically switch between internal and external when you insert/remove VGA cable?

Does your laptop have any function keys? Have you also tried closing the lid while it's booting and working from the external monitor only? Your laptop might also be confused if you have it hooking up to a TV using S-Video also.

It does have function keys but I disabled them by doing a clean install of XP. I have tried with the lid closed yes, but still no available resolution.

When it was working, I had it extended across the two displays. Nothing else is connected to the monitor or laptop

    Not that I know of.

On my notebook, if I plug in an external display my laptop automatically switches to it. I use a dual monitor setup with my notebook; an external SXGA monitor as primary, and my laptop's WSXGA+ as secondary.

You can use the Fn + Fx keys to switch between monitors, have you tried that?

EDIT: I got beat to it.

It has a lot of resolutions, just not the correct one. I don't understand why the resolution was there and then disappeared

Okay, finally sorted it. I installed Omega Drivers & ATI Tool & MultiRes and with some playing around got the desktop spread out over both screens!
