I'm thinking of getting some external speakers for use with my lappy. Anyone have any suggestions, experiences, perferences? I also want to get the speakers with a sub-woofer. I want to be able to use the speakers for games, movies and music.

Thanks in advance for your help.

I'm looking for Non-Portable. My lappy goes nowhere. My budget would be around $100-300USD. I want something worth getting, that really works the way its advertized and its has good solid sound.

    Thanks,

Klipse ProMedia 2.1 or best yet DIY via home audio systems with a amp, powered sub, and 2 good bookshelf or floor standing speakers.

Sorry to break it to you... but Bose is overpriced crap. Not worth the plastic it's made out of.

A heads up, don't -no matter what you do- get any BOSE products. They suck as a company, and their products may seem nice (until you discover their one major flaw, which is that they are crap products -plain and simple), just a heads up :)

I can recommend the Klispch iGrove SXT (as that is what I have) and it is a beyond AMAZING. It gets VERY loud, does not distort, handles the whole sound spectrum very well, has very very nice sounding/ deep bass, has a dock for a ipod (if you have one. it also has a s-video out port, so if your ipod can output to a tv -as the ipod classic does- then it will work), and it has a standard 3.5mm input (though the cable it comes with is a bit on the short side). I got mine over a year ago for $150, and it looks like that is still the going price.
I use them every day -and I mean every day- at the very least I will use them in the mornings with my ipod classic (using the alarm feature of my ipod to play music to wake me up... is sorta works... I'm just not a morning person x.x ), they are also my main speakers for my desktop, or my laptop if I am at my desk, and just great to use when people are over. even after over a year of use I have not had any problems with it what so ever, and it still sounds as good as it did on day 1 (a truly great product!)

I also have the Altec Lansing ORBIT USB speaker, while the sound is amazing for such a small and simple device (and it being dirt cheap, about $20 brand new), the sound is not jaw dropping enough to replace a decent set of speakers (such as the iGrove SXT)

There is virtually no reason to get the Bose over the much cheaper Klipsch, unless you enjoy having people who know next to nothing about audio componentry admire your speakers.

Definitely Klipsch 2.1 ProMedia's. I do not think they are made any more, but it is absolutely worth every single penny and ounce of effort to try and get your hands on them (even a used set). They are legendary for the sound quality and clarity they can output.

    Absolutely positively get those speakers.

Seconded this. You can still get them but only from a few places.

You can get them directly from kipsch; they just don't have a lot of resellers.

IMO don't bother with a 5.1 set, it's more marketing than quality sound. The Klipsch delivers much better sound for a much lower price than Bose or Logitech.

5.1 is really not worth it if just sound quality is important. It will cost more for the same quality, it requires more space and precision to have properly setup and things like music are generally only 2 channel anyways leaving you only with proper 5.1 movies and some games to use all of the available channels.

Absolutely agree with you here. I'd give you more +rep, but I can't, because I already gave you too much +rep.

When I want room-filling sound output, I use high quality 2-channel speakers. When I want an immersive gaming experience with great surround sound, I use high quality 2-channel headphones with a good virtual surround downmixing algorithm.

I find that even in movies the rear channels are mostly used for gimmicky sort of effects rather than anything useful. The things that make the biggest difference that my 5.1 home theater setup are the center channel and the 250 watt subwoofer hooked up to it. I have played games on it as well, and I find that headphones with proper virtual surround sound work better. After all, humans have 2 ears, not 5.
