Looking to get some small speakers for my new HP nc6320 (unsurprisingly it can't get close to my old Tosh's Harman Kardons)..I can't work out from the range out there which would be preferable, USB or wired?

I will be using an external soundcard at some stage..so I don't know whether that and it's output(s) needs to be factored in.

Don't want anything overly bulky or something that vibrates on a desk or tray. While on the other hand has to be decent enough monitoring quality.

    TIA

Logitech makes some good, moderately priced speakers. The Bose Companion 2 is an excellent 2.0 speaker system.

I like the look of the Bose..quite heavy from the specs but that solidity might be a bonus.

Although these are an awesome 2.1 system. I think they're probably to bulky for what he wants, at least thats how it sounded from the description he gave of what he wanted.

Yep you're right, the two speaker Bose is about as big as I've want to go really.

what about the pro media 2.0 speakers? they are from what I've experienced a great 2.0 set up, though the powerblock is not exactly tiny.
They work great on this 15" lcd TV I set up to watch music videos while using a very loud tredmill.

Bose and "excellent" are 2 words rarely found together. Overpriced, hyped, tuned for untrained ears and there are far superior products for less money. Bose is a four letter word.

I got the cheaper pair they make for $30 at Staples and I'm quite happy with them. Small and travel well with the case provided. Wasn't trying to rock the house just get a step above the internals for music or watching a movie. For the price point I'm very pleased. :)

Don't get USB speakers. Get speakers that plug in the audio output of your PC.

    Agreed.

I don't even think USB speakers support S/PDIF output.

I don't know how they're thought of now, but the JBL Creature II speakers were rated pretty well some months ago when they first came out.

They used to be $100 back then, but are down to around $50-60 now. I'm thinking of picking some up myself -- unless, of course there's a better and equally cost-effective solution.
