I'm looking for an external HDD.

    Interfaces: Firewire 800 preferred.

Space: Anywhere from 250GB - 1TB is fine.

    Speed: 7200rpm minimum.

    Portability: Not important.

Brands: I'm looking for something from LaCie, Seagate/Maxtor, or WD, mainly for warranty and support needs if they ever arise. Willing to take suggestions on clearly superior products from any brand though.

Reliability: Very important. I don't want to deal with having to ship it back and argue about warranties if at all possible.

Software and platform: Must be compatible with all major consumer OS's and file systems of course. Indifferent to prepackaged software - I'll end up formatting over it anyway.

Price Range: I'd prefer to keep the price per GB between $0.3 and 0.35. Willing to pay up to $250, possibly something slightly more expensive if it has incredible value-for-price. Obviously the cheaper the better.

Also, any general opinions of WD vs. LaCie vs Seagate wouldn't hurt either. I actually didn't like my last two WDs, but can be persuaded to buy another if the competition doesn't have anything better.

I plan to make this purchase in 2 weeks. If there is any new technology coming out in that span of time, please let me know as well.

    Specifically, I'm looking at
    LaCie d2 Quadra
    My Book Studio Edition
    Any opinions on these two?

    Thanks in advance.

I've been looking forever for an external exclosure for my old 1TB SAMSUNG Spinpoint F1. I still haven't found anything promising to put it in, was tilting on this external enclosure.

I would suggest that you go the same path as me. ;D
Its much cheaper, and much much more stable with a good enclosure.

Don't think that its a big project, just stick the harddrive in the enclosure, then plug it in the eSATA/USB/1394. And the enclosure may need a power adapter (depending on what you get).

OOooooh.....hehe, a lil late for me after putting this much effort to convincing you. Maybe someone else can comment on this; this maximising (though is cheaper too), will not reach its potential if you plan to use it as a USB device. xD xD

    Sorry! xD

Will be great for a eSATA connection, okay for a firewire; limited on USB2.0

Either way this solution is functional, is cheaper, and you can always use the drive on a desktop if you wanted.
