External USB 3.0 CD/DVD Drive?

Talk to me guys, whats out there that's proven? I see some flimsy cheap looking stuff and searches are not showing me anything most popular if you know what I mean.

Are you specifically looking for USB 3.0? I had assumed that external DVD drives had stayed at USB 2.0 because it was fast enough for the optical disc read / write speeds (Blu-ray might benefit from USB 3.0 speed).

I've only got experience with the portable DVD drives but have had no problem with recent (~3 years) Samsung, LG and Liteon burners. Liteon, as a lesser known name, often provides best value. There was a time (10+ years ago?), however, when compatibility with drives and media was an issue.

Thanks, if 2.0 over 3.0 is not a matter I guess not. I'll have to research but please let me know whats working for you.

 

I've been using this since 2 years, never failed me. It's an external Bluray Writed/Reader but it doesn't mention if it's USB 2.0 or 3.0

I got mine from HIDevolution when I purchased my prvious Clevo P870DM laptop and have been using it since then.

I recently asked for a replacement cable and they sent me this new housing for it which includes the cable built in so you never lose it again......

although I can't find it for sale online anymore. I guess it was discontinued. but look for anything from Matshita/Panasonic they are pretty solid.

@therock no point going 3.0 in terms of data throughput, that's for sure. For power, single USB 3.0 port is still worse than 2x USB 2.0, but if you insist on not using y-cable for some reason, single 3.0 may make sense at small premium.

 

Just buy a drive from a well-known brand. If you need me to name a few brands:

Asus
Sony
Philips
LG
Panasonic
Samsung
Dell

If you want to just keep it dead-simple, just go on Amazon, and find an external USB DVD/Blu-Ray drive from one of those brands; and has both a high review score, and a high number of submitted reviews.

 

FWIW used 12.7mm DVD-RW drives in good condition sell as low as $3.5; new USB 2.0 enclosure, be it SATA or IDE, is another $6.5.

 

I got a Panasonic USB 3 Model SE-506. Blu/DVD/CD. It seems to do the job though I've only used it for occasional rips and burns a few times a month, not sustained playback. It's about as portable as you can get and seems reliable. Not sure I'd feel comfortable throwing it in a backpack or bag on a regular basis though, but for keeping on a shelf and plugging it into my laptop or desktop at home, it's good.

Being that it's 2+ years old though, I'd imagine there is a newer/better model now.

 

Great stuff guys. I just got back from Walmart and happened through the electronics section to find an LG Ultra Slim Portable DVD Writer GP55EX70. Mfg Date 8/2017.
After the fact I just read horrible reviews on the LG site it but its plug and play on mine and its first job was to install Photoshop and it went very well.

I use a slot loading DVD/CD drive from LG. Works in flat or perpendicular positions

 

Add Lite-On to that list. Been using mine (eNAU108) since 2010 with zero issues.

 

Panasonic Blu-ray Burner BDR-XD05B works great for me (on MSI GT75VR Titan Pro-202 Windows 10 Pro)

 

ASUS SDRW-08D2S-U pretty fast and thin, usb 2.0 and 3.0 compatible. My sister has it (MacBook air).

 

Is the Panasonic compatible w/Macs?
