    Hello everyone,

I have connected my 21.5" Acer HD LED 1920 x 1080 monitor to my Sony Vaio VPCEE3L0E. The image on the Acer monitor is poor and "stretched" because the Vaio only supports up to 1366 x 768 resolution i.e. video card is not up to standard. The monitor only has DVI and VGA ports. The laptop however has a HDMI port. So my question is:

If I buy a HDMI to DVI cable like THIS and then buy an external video card adapter such as THIS one which apparently supports 1920 x 1080 will this then support the optimum resolution that the monitor is capable of ??

I do not need the computer to support games I am only concerned about the overall clarity of the picture on the monitor as I would like to use it to show designs to clients. Thank you for any help you can offer !!!

vikkilouiseb, you don't need to buy anything. What you need is setup your laptop to use extended desktop rather than mirrored mode if you want to use both monitors at once, or turn off laptop monitor and adjust resolution of your external monitor if you are willing to use external monitor only when it's connected. It can be done in Catalyst control panel. Your laptop supports external monitor resolution up to 1920x1200. You can use either VGA-VGA cable or HDMI-DVI cable / HDMI-HDMI cable + HDMI-DVI adapter to connect your laptop to your external monitor. If you are not satisfied with image quality after following my advice, only then go for HDMI-to-DVI connection. Don't waste money on cables and adapters, buy the cheapest.
