Does there exist anything similar to the wired remote seen here:

except that it plugs in to the computer line out, adjusts the volume, and then goes to the speaker cable? The volume control on my speakers is in an inconvenient location and I'd like to have a controller that looks nice and is easier to operate.

I'd prefer something that looks nice and actually sits on a desk.

I'm not sure if you'll find many simple volume controls that are that fancy llike what you're looking for, since they are such basic devices.

If you can't find what you are looking for, you might want to look into one of two options... either an external sound card, or a keyboard that has mltimedia buttons on it.

If you go with the former, the Audigy 2 NX external sound card might be want you are looking for. It's small and has volume controls right on the top. Granted, it is overkill if you just want simple volume control. However, if you don't have a high-end sound card already, it could be a nice addition to your desk..?

Yeah I don't of anything nice looking like that for such a simple function. The only volume controls I know of are the little simple things like we linked above.
Like bmcc said, maybe you could look at an externa sound card, something like the M-Audio Audiophile should do (I do believe the headphone level control will control the volume output):
Also you can buy a keyboard or a mouse that have a volume control button.
    I own a Logitech MX 610:

If you look at the picture, it has a volume control (volume increase, decrease and mute) button.

Just listing a couple options you can consider. The volume buttons on my mouse are great and it's pretty much what I use to control the volume all the time (very convenient to use).

Doesn't seem like there are a lot of them out there with volume control buttons. But I think it's a great little feature and very useful, so this might be a good solution for what he needs.

Just keep in mind that with setpoint (logitech's software) activated, the buttons will control the main speaker volume under windows. If setpoint is disabled, the buttons will control whatever is playing (Winamp, WMP, etc).
