Hi guys. Can you suggest me an exteral keyboard for my Alienware 17. I need a mechanical keyboard, simple design, with backlight (no red or blue), wired, USA layout. I'll use it for gaming and for work (software developer) so i need it very fast and precise.

Coolermaster's quickfire lineup of keyboards in general could appeal to you as an option. Ducky also makes great no nonsense keyboards.

I prefer white or RPG customizable. I have reading problems with blue, red and other colours.

Just got a Logitech G710+, it's pretty slick. All mechanical, fairly quiet.

    Good pick.

Tenkeyless keyboards are really great. Once you start using them for gaming, it's really hard to go back to regular 101-key / 104-key size keyboards.

There are some tenkeyless keyboards out there (like the CM Storm Quickfire TK) that have a "pseudo-keypad", that allow you to have navigation keys (Ins, Del, Home, End, etc) in addition to a NumPad. It doesn't come with the adaptive LEDs that the Rapid-i does, but my opinion is that it's a much better keyboard layout.

Thanks kent, i'll remember your suggestion. I notice there are Quickfire TK version with Cherry Brown and white LED version, so it's suitable for me. After i've tried the Rapid-i, i have to buy another keyboard for work, so maybe i'll go with Quickfire TK.

    Interesting you mention that.

I own 2 or 3 CM Storm Quickfire TK's with Cherry MX Blues for use at home. And I got so used to it, that I ended up buying a Cherry Brown with White LED version for work. I figure it would have a nice tactile feel like the MX Blues, without being as noisy. I'm typing on that keyboard right now.

Of course, a crazy looking tenkeyless keyboard with pulsing LEDs seems a bit "flashy" for work. And I used to get strange looks from coworkers. But once they tried the keyboard, they understood why I'd spend $80 of my personal money for a keyboard for work use.

On a related note... if you're really looking to get into keyboard nerdery, check out MassDrop.com. It's a group-buy community that specializes in a few "nerdy" categories (e.g. audiophile headphones, mechanical keyboards). And their selection of mecahnical keyboards is by far the nerdiest I've ever seen. You can really get to see all sorts of crazy awesome keyboards there (most of them Tenkeyless).

So if you're looking for a new "toy" to buy as a tenkeyless keyboard, I'd definitely recommend checking out Massdrop for the options there.

Yes i'll go Brown and white LED for using in office :D
But you can turn off the illumination?

I have a question: don't you feel the need of a writst pad? I've read the keyboard height, it seems higher than normal.

Nope. Didn't bother with a wrist rest. I'm sure you could get one if you wanted... I personally just never found a need for one.

BTW, Massdrop has a bunch of wrist rests too.

I passed on my Quickfire pro because I could not get use to the height and got meself a Razer Ultimate with blue keys. Am quite happy with it. I find that most mech keyboard have too much drop making it a little difficult to set up. I suppose I was so use to the flatter design of the Logitech K800 that I had used for 5 years afore it gave up the ghost.

I could not quite get used to the sudden high drop at the bottom edge of a Quickstorm I had switche to Razer Ultimate. Has been good so far.
