Any advice as far as external webcams go? I'm trying to decide on a Latitude E6400 which has a built-in webcam (only 0.3 megapixel camera, though). Not sure what the resolution is for video, but I wonder if an external webcam like the ones from Logitech would be worth it.

If so, what model(s) do you recommend that include a decent microphone? I would probably mount the webcam on my desktop monitor and dock my laptop to use it. I'm using the webcam primarily for skype.

I have an HP DV5T with a 1.3Mp built in cam.
I bought a Logitech pro9000 webcam, and the difference is ASTOUNDING.
Built in webcams are there for basic configurations. Manufacturers can't spend a lot on something like the webcam and keep prices down.

You'll love the Logitech pro9000. They do have the actual ltop version, but I think the pro9000 looks better, and fits quite nicely on my ltop.
The software is also quite nice, and gives you some decent control over the image. Also, the built in mic in the pro9000 works well too.

0.3MP = 640x480, which is more than enough for Skype (if I'm not mistaken that is the maximum resolution supported by Skype). First try the built in camera, if you are not satisfied with the quality (noise, color, brightness etc..) then consider an external one.

I have to admit it is easily noticeable

Actually with the top 3 logitech webcams you get HQ connection which looks amazing
