I was planning to use a nike bag =) i wanted something small that wouldnt make it noticeable im carrying a notebook. Nikebags are thin tho so it might not be safe, I'd like to hear what people recommend.

    hegemon,

    http://www.caselogic.com/sporty_laptop_backpack/product_detail/index.cfm?modelid=44260

i got this bag for my V2410 in over the holidays. it's really fantastic, here are some pros-

    +lots of pockets and compartments
+laptop fits snug and very secure
    +excellently padded
+the water bottle holder on the side will fit a nalgene no problem!
+two large separate zippered compartments, one for your laptop and the other can hold textbook sized items no problem
+basically the greatest laptop bag out there (haha i don't know about this one, but it really is very good)

hope that helps, i really reccomend it.

I bought a Targus Groove backpack. For the price, weight, and quality it was unbeatable. I bought it for a 15 incher but I exchanged it for a 14 in widescreen and this is slightly large but still very usable.

My only problem with the Groove is the lack of good water bottle pockets, since it has them mounted on other pockets. They're great for other stuff, but I actually carry two water bottles.

The Case Logic one is nice. I've never seen it. There are contradicting pictures; does it have one or two? It looks like they're fastened with bungees and have pass-through sides. Is that correct?

I have this pink case, don't even know what brand it is. But I think its awesome! My aunt gave it to me for my 21st birthday last year. Trouble is... its meant for a 14" doesn't fit my 15.4" o.o; If it fit it would be my favorite. Instead I use an ugly black targus I stole(I mean price wise) at Sams Club.

for some reason, mine doesn't look exactly like the pictures on the site, but i believe they are supposed to be the same bag. i purchased mine in hong kong though, which might explain the minor differences. mine has two water bottle holders, one on each side... they are the same material as the rest of the bag, and are tightened by strong elastic cords. like i said earlier, they stretch quite a bit and will hold nalgenes really well.

Years ago, I had a laptop that always stayed home, and I used my laptop bag to carry my college books to and from school. One night after school, a bunch of us decided to go out for diner. An hour or so later when I returned to my car, the laptop bag had been removed from my car, a window smashed... I'm pretty sure that a normal backpack wouldn't have brought the attention that this bag did, so now I always make sure that my laptop bag doesn't look like a laptop bag.
Buy a sleeve, and then you can use just about any bag you want...

Definitely agree with SMP; I have no desire to let anyone I don't work with know that I have a laptop. I'm also afraid to get an MP3 player, though they're still too expensive, anyway.

Same here. I carry my laptop everyday from work to home. I take a bus at morning and take a cab at the afternoon and I specifically bought the Dell backpack (see my signature as to what computer I use) as I don't want to draw attention to myself as I live in a country where there's high number of delicuency.

Fortunately for me, I look like I'm just going to college and average middle class person so it kind of distracts people from the fact that I'm carrying a laptop and a Motorola V3 (which down here is the rave to have) and that I'm a middle ranking executive in a well-respected company :)

I have the Heys ePac bag. It's well padded, thick padding for back support, it's light, lots of pockets, and they even have one with wheels! Lots of other features.

I'm liking the Considerable Embarassment (Crumpler!) that I bought yesterday, although my shoulder isn't.

I'll admit, I bought it mostly because of the looks, but aside from the lack of a cell phone holder and a good place to put my .mp3 player, it's quite excellent.

I gotta vote for waterfield. The people there are awesome. I recently bought the large cargo. They totaly went out of thier way to let me compare the medium and large cargos. The medium was too small, but I didn't like the bag stiffiner in the large (not comfortable), so they took it out and sewed it back together, free of charge. If you're looking for a great bag w/ ridiculous service, check them out.

I recently purchased a Victorinox Menash for heading back and forth to school with my ASUS z63a, books, lunch, etc. It holds a lot, although it only has a single bottle pouch. The best part is the straps. They are nice and wide, and they have this crazy gel-type padding that is actually a bunch of little fingers. Not exactly a shoulder massage, but they feel really nice. They look kinda like these sandals

Anyway, it fits the z63a perfectly in the vertical (while in the bag,) it's a little loose side-to-side, but not more than a centimeter or so on either side.

Ah, mine is the Swiss Synergy, has so many pockets, just love it. I bought it with a gift card to motivate myself to by a notebook. But I don't consider it the best to hide stuff in, that would be the infamous: Pizzabox.

laptop compartment is little big, that became a blessing for me. I have a padded sleeve with me, so inserted sleeve inside and fits V2000z perfectly.

This way it has two layers of padding.
BTW this is very light bag which suites light packers and also very cheap for less than $30 ( $26 on Amazon)

The absolute best bag for the V2000 and many other laptops is:

The "dennow.nomadic" they sell at the Container Store.

I've used them all s from fancy Tumi's to Swiss Army and everything in between.

Compact, but with lots of space for all the gadgets. Replace the strap with an improved one (like the Airlift), and it's heaven.

Low key, low profile, unbelievably useful.

    (Can be backpack or sling.

Dennow Nomadic? Can't find anything that says anything about it - at the container store's web site or anywhere. If you have a picture, that'd be great.

Tom Bihn Monolith. Lots of sizes to fit your lappy just right. Lots of protection. Very "boutique" name, too, if that matters. $45.

I like to use a small burton snowboard backpack, the phaeton with a good sleeve (I like shinza). Its great because it doesn't look like I'm carrying around a laptop, its small, secure and comfortable... not enormous like lots of the computer bags out there. I got mine from ebags on the cheap. Also has a nice pocket on shoulder strap for cell phone or nano... and the board straps are great for storing a light jacket when it warms up

Here's the link; it's not called that ont he web site, but that is the bag, and the interior collateral uses that name.

It doesn't look like much on the web site (thecontainerstore.com), but it really is super functional.

    http://www.containerstore.com/browse/Product.jhtml?CATID=255&PRODID=66615

They call it a "convertible laptop bag".

The stock strap is crappy, so replace it with a nice padded one. Jansport makes this one:

    http://www.ebags.com/jansport/airlift_trade_shoulder_strap/product_detail/index.cfm?modelid=18600

There are others; you need to try what works for you. If you search eBags for "shoulder straps", you'll find a whole selection.

Whats a good bookbag/laptop bag? After I left my bag in the Taxi cab Im gonna need a new one, and I need something that can be used for both. I dont take my laptop to class everyday, so I need something that functions well as both. Also it needs to be a messenger bag, and I have a 15" powerbook

The pictures do not do it justice. It is not ugly...actually it's pretty sharp, just subdued. Doesn't cost a fortune either.

Check it out in person, and then judge.

I have both the timbuk2 commute and the medium messenger bag. The commute is more suited for carrying a laptop (obviously), but the pocket gets annoying if you don't use it with a computer all the time. I tend to use the messenger bag, even when I carry my computer (just in a padded sleeve). I considered a crumpler, but the lack of pictures and reviews prevented me from feeling comfortable spending the money on it.

The Jansport Data File is a GREAT laptop bag.

Everyone who has seen it or used it have found it to be great. I'm unreservedly recommending it. I've been using it for over a year now. No significant wear or tear.

check out www.jansport.com and navigate --> computer bags --> data file.

Look how much stuff this bag can hold with good compartments for everything, while still looking reasonably stylish.

Wow- thanks for the idea!!! Funny how you sometimes overlook the obvious. My daughter was complaining of back pain (she carries too much and has a chronic back problem to boot) and I was trying to think of ways to alleviate it (other than the practical backpack solution which doesn't hold aesthetic appeal unfortunately). As a physical therapist I was trying to figure out a solution, but didn't know these accessory straps existed. The new Victorinox one looks great (I am a little concerned about the reviews of the Jansport ones, with several people complaining of the clip unfastening). THANKKS!!!!

With the 15" Powerbook being a small sized 15" it might just fit inside the Considerable Embarrassment.

If you need one let me know. I have a black/grey Considerable Embarrassment that isn't going to work for me. I haven't seen RoadWired mentioned in this thread. I ended up ordering this bag:

    RoadWired Skooba Satchel info
It received good reviews from Laptop magazine & PC magazine. Appears to have a ton of storage without adding bulk and the padded laptop area is well implemented. I'll post impressions once it arrives.

Cygnus, you've got plenty options, depending on how much more specific your desires are. Look into the Dakine Dual, Terminal, and 101 (I think all available at www.summithut.com). Also check out some of the backpacks at www.ebags.com, such as the ones made by Burton (which look snowboard-y), High Sierra and The North Face (which usually look outdoorsy), and UnderArmour (which look like gym backpacks). If you can describe your ideal backpack, I can probably nail one for you.

    Best,

I just got the STM Medium Loft Bag and Im loving it, it's vertical which I like much more. It fits my Powerbook g4 Perfectly, and it's not too bulky so its not a pain when you're not carrying your laptop around and just carrying books. Now Im just waiting on my foofbag for extra protection.

Best I've found is made by a company named Joe Rocket. I get a lot of my motorcycle gear from them. They have a back back with a dedicated computer compartment. Plenty of padding, and velcro straps to hold it in. It also has an internal MP3 pocket with a little rubber port to pass the head phone wire through. Plenty of other pockets as well. The back and straps have nice thick padding and it has a removable waist strap, which is nice if you commute on a motorcycle. Only problem is, I can't find a link to it. It's a pretty new product and I guess they haven't added it to their site yet. I'll post a link if I find one.
