I've noticed two basic schools of mouse usage:
    - those who grasp the mouse with their fingertips, moving it primarily with finger and wrist motion, and
    - those who hold it with their entire palms, moving it primarily with wrist and forearm motion

I belong in the first group; how about you guys?

Heh, yeah, "whole hand" kinda is what I meant by palm.

I try to hold the mouse with my whole palm, but usually laptop mouses are pretty small so it only really seems that my fingers are resting on the mouse.

Hey, I'm just curious, could people sort of give an idea of there hand size too? That is PROBABLY one of the reasons you do one or the other (or that is my hypothesis at least).

Well, it would be more a "hand to mouse size ratio" thing than just hand size, no? Large hands with small mice, small hands with large mice, etc.
I'd say my hands are average-sized, tending towards large. Still, I use fingertips on all sizes of mouse from tiny notebook ones up to my old MX500, so I'm not sure that says anything.
I'd say the reason I 'fingertip' is primarily because it gives me faster and more accurate mouse motion...

I have a really tiny mouse for my notebook.

But people have pointed out that I hold the mouse sort of diagonally...which I guess is weird...

I personally like the trackball that you manipulate with just your finger tips. That way once i get my wrist and hand comfortable im good to go.

I use my fingertips - my wrist rarely moves from the desk. I have a large mouse (MX1000) so fortunately my hands are kinda large I guess - 9" from thumbtip to pinkytip when spread, 7.5" from middle fingertip to wrist.

Probably relative height of desktop to shoulder matters too - people with higher mousing surface probably are more likely to be fingertip than whole-hand if they have to hold their arm in the air to do it.

I'm a fingertipper. I have pretty big hands, so it's a lot easier and more comfortable to use my fingertips than it is to try to hold the mouse in my palm. Quicker and more accurate, too, in my opinion.

since this thread was started, i now pay attention to how i mouse. i primarily hold it whole-hand, but if i need to push the mouse beyond the reach of my arm, ill use my fingers (whole fingers, not just the tips), to push it out further and pull it back, so i dont need to move my arm

related question: do people who use their fingertips typically have the mouse speed set quicker than people who palm it, to give range over the whole screen with less motion of the mouse?

I think I'm a bit of both, I hold my mouse (Laser Mouse 6000) such that my palm rests on the mouse, but I leave my wrist resting on the edge of the table. When I move the mouse, I move my wrist, but not really the rest of my fingers. When I do need to move the mouse to the extreme corners of the screen, I push it out with all my fingers, and then back again so that my palm rests on the mouse again.

I guess, I'm just a "lazy" kind of mouse user... I need my wrist, palm and fingers resting on something all the time. Sometimes when I'm in the middle of typing or just scrolling through a page, I'll switch to using the ThinkPoint to move the cursor or the trackpad for scrolling (I've otherwise disabled all other features of the trackpad except for its vertical and horizontal scrolling capabilities).

I have a notebook mouse (came free with lappie), so obviously I'm a fingertipper. Back home it's a trackball. Actually, I can't remember what it feels like to hold a desktop mouse... rambling

I have a travel sized mouse which I have to use with my fingertips, but my Logitech mouse on my desktop I control with my palm. I think a lot of it is determined by the type of mouse used.

I have big hands, I like my mouse speed to virtually be as fast as possible. I like to hold the mouse with my palm, one of the reasons that I liked the Logitech MX1000 because it was 'taller' then most mice so it filled my hand up. I use both my arm and my wrist for moving the mouse around. Although I don't use a mouse nearly as much as I used because I quit playing games... don't need uber micro anymore.

Fingertipper here. I had to move my mouse around and think about it after I read the question and before I answered, but I'd say I'm primarily a fingertipper. Everything is held with the fingertips, except the bottom part of my thumb (the fleshy part at the base of your palm) also touches the mouse.

Usually my wrist is at rest, though, and my forearm doesn't move much unless I'm reaching beyond normal range of motion. So, I'd say that's fingertipping more than anything.

Fairly large hands. Can palm a basketball straight off a dribble.

I have a laptop size mouse so more fingers are in contact than palm.

Miller - that's almost exactly how I hold mine; the bottom part of my thumb acts kind of like a backstop to my mouse motion.

It's funny how most people don't realize the way they do things unless specifically asked to think about it... I've noticed that in all sorts of mundane things.

Looks like fingertippers outnumber palmers about 2 to 1 .. that ratio's stayed about there ever since the thread started, heh.

I've never even thought about it before, but I tend to keep my wrist still and move the mouse almost totally with just my fingers. I guess I'm a little weird.

when I first saw this thread, I was sitting on my couch using the touchpad... and I had no idea which one I used.

it bugged me so much that I had to come and plug in my receiver and find out!

    oh yeah, fingertips. ;)

    I am palmer.

I use two logitech mouse. One of them is MX900 and the other is VX revolution. The MX900 is way too heavy to move with your fingertips, that thing can kill someone if you throw it hard enough.

I sometimes fingertip on my VX because its so light.

(Of course, i use the touchpad most of the time.)
