I need to get my son a flash drive for high school and I have a couple of questions:

Is a flash drive with a password protect really needed or is it overkill?

I can get a SanDisk Micro 1GB flash drive for $30, but I notice it retracts but leaves the plug-end open. Could this opening get fouled or dirty making the drive useless? Is a flash drive with a cap better?

password protect only if you are going to store secure files on it. and Open plug end does have a significantly increased chance of destruction, but if you're careful, or if the capped one is the same price, get a cap.

Or, get a USB extenstion cord and cut off the extension part. That DIY cap.

I can get one for $19 but I have to deal with that rebate stuff.

oh, And I'm pretty sure you can password protect individual files (like word docs). 19 bucks is a decent deal. I'd go with the rebates cuz all you have to do is send in the forms. 8)
