I need a cooler for my HP DV7 quad and found this Cooler Master NotePal U3 for a good price, and good reviews.

Just curious, if I'm laying on my bed/the couch, and it's on my knees/thighs, would it be comfortable? Can any of you that own this cooler vouch for it?

Having used an older/smaller model (2 fans instead of 3) of that particular notebook cooler for the past 3 years, I can say without a doubt that the cooler works as intended. The fans can produce a level of noise that you may or may not notice (depending on your ears and environment noises).

If you have it on a desk or table for an extended amount of time, be wary, cleaning the dust from the fans is difficult and it will blow up dust towards the laptop's vents if you don't clean the flat surface every now and then.

The angle works fine if you have a large laptop, but for me, with my AW m11x as my main computer, well, not so much.

Moving the fans far up (towards the back end) is a bit tricky since the rubber bits that are on the sides are actually covering some holes.

It shouldn't pose too much comfort problems though (unless you're a guy and it's crushing against your crotch), but for the most part, it works as intended.

Do you ever use it while lying down on your bed or the couch? Is it comfortable there?

I've only used it in the table, but if you use it without the fans, yes.

I use my U2 lying in bed. It's comfortable on my chest and on my knees.

Absolutely not. If that is your intention then you should shop elsewhere. This thing is too big and unwieldy. It is a desktop device only. It is NOT ergonomically designed for your lap/bed/etc.

what would be a good alternative for someone that needs a cooler that can be put on laps while in bed/couch?

What he said. Sadly I gifted my CM Infinite to my cousin, and sold the E1 :( Oh well, I'll buy another Infinite at some point, this time in black :) If you decide to get an Infinite, be advised that it's on the noisy side when it's put on max.

Using one with my new AW and no way would I try to heft this thing onto my lap, and I'm a decently sized guy. I used it with my 15" MBP for a day and it definitely got uncomfortable after a while.

(Ima talk about the actual product first, and will get to it being comfy soon)

My experience with it was awful. I'm pretty sure the fans blow air INTO the laptop, but my laptop has fans that blow OUT on the underside.

    That's just... what... the...
    Fans working against each other...

Anyways, I personally thought the material of the thing (was it aluminum?) was pretty uncomfortable, with the extremely sharp edges at the sides etc.

Also, I managed to scratch my laptop's screen with this thing. Meh. While the other-most edges are covered in rubber-material, the rest of the sharp edges aren't. Be careful where you wave this around. (and they advertise this as a laptop case on the box, HAH, great way to scratch your compy).

Also, it was probably just that my laptop was heavy as heck, but the laptop kept sliding down... the center part of the pad is not rubberized or anything...

    So let's recap:

    1. Worked against my laptop's fans
    2. Sharp and scratchy
    3. Poor grip on laptop.

Biased review, I know, but tis serious...

So is it "comfortable". Not really, at least for me. Rough edges and poor laptop grip. Heck, I was so afraid of using it that I stopped using it. Not to mention it didn't even work with my laptop.

    Meh.
