    I'm currently looking at these:

    Sound Blaster Recon3D Omega Wireless

as the reviews are quite good, but i feel the price is a bit high since i know if i get a unit without a mic i can go for various sennheisers and sony's which sound great. (i havent tried these creatives myself).

does anyone have a suggestion around the 100 dollar price range for something great that preferably also has a mic (for use when gaming)?

    thanks in advance.

Look at the Plantronics Gamecom Headsets

You can score the Logitech G35 for under $100 too sometimes but I would go with Plantronics personally.

you reckon the sound quality is better than the creative?

Look into the corsair vengeance series..
    1300 - stereo
    1500 - emulated 7.1

They've received pretty good reviews and I personally have the 1500 and can testify to the fact that they're excellent for gaming and movies and pretty good for music too..
I've used the logitech g35s before and i found the corsair to be superior in terms of audio quality and game compatibility(for the 5.1/7.1 sound)

Let me also tell you that they currently do have some driver quirks. Nothing major but you should know.

This review is the only one i found which highlights the good aspects as well as the bad(driver quirks). You can google for other reviews. The rest of em just went on raving about the audio quality and never said anything anything else.

I personally would not get any surround sound headphones, you get fine surround from 2 speaker stereo using the games built in 3d sound engine and no issues with compatibility and stereo is the ONLY way to go for music.

In this situation (50% music, 50% gaming), I would agree with this advice. Get a pair of entry-level audiophile headphones like Audio Technica ATH-M50 headphones. Skip all of the "gaming" and "surround sound" headsets from computer peripheral companies (Corsair, Logitech, Creative, Razer, etc).

    The reason is this:

    * It is easy to get a pair of headphones that are absolutely awesome in music (10/10) and very good for gaming (8/10).

    * It is relatively difficult to find a pair of headphones that are awesome in gaming (10/10) and very good for music (4/10).

    * And if you want a pair of headphones that are awesome in music (10/10) and gaming (10/10), get ready to pull out your checkbook.

I'd disagree. I use the G35 with the DH enabled in gaming - true, it doesn't work well in every game but DH is more or less becoming a de facto implementation - and it does provide depth that a stereo set can't, even with emulated in-game effects (and most of those engines are hopeless). It's also a lot better than >$100 soundcards (allied to my >$1K headphones) in terms of surround, which surprised me a lot I have to say.

The better headsets are price-competitive with decent headphones at their street price point when you turn stereo off - and e.g. the G35 also has an in-codec EQ. Plus, the convenience of a swing-away, auto-off mic cannot be understated on the Logitech.

I am interested in the Vengeance 1500 - it'd be interesting to see if they offer anything above the G35.

I'd steer clear of wireless though. Worse audio, worse mic, one more thing to charge.

I don't want to make another thread relating to this topic so I'll put my post here. I'm looking for something similar to this thread's topic. I prefer supra-aural (sits on top of the ears) headphones that's good for listening to music, but also good for gaming.

I go on ventrilo every day and much prefer a usb instead of (2) 3.5mm jacks. The set I have is a logitech clearchat comfort usb and these serve me well, but they died. Anyone have something similar, if not, better than the ones I have?

    Sennheiser PC166 is a good choice for a USB-based supra-aural multi-purpose headset.

It looks good, but how's the build quality? For the prices its going for, I would expect to last for a while.
