So my MX Revos are starting to show their age (no major issues though yet from the still-working ones) and my G9's have literally fallen apart recently. The G's qualify for warranty so I'm claiming on that, but I have issues with the G9's in terms of their shape which causes me hand pain in long periods of use, and obviously how they've fallen apart in a relatively short time, especially as they've been used much less intensively than my MX's - so I'm thinking about doing away with them as well after they're warrantied.

I'm also scaling back my PC's at home - and my primary workstation at home might even go notebook. So in looking for something that'd replace both the G9 and the MX, I was looking at something like the Orochi at first thinking it might be ideal - but the lack of a tilt wheel is a deal-killer. I do a huge amount of Excel-ing and the tilt wheel has been one of the single most important new things to crop up on a mouse in recent years for me.

What I need from a mainstay mouse:
    - tilt wheel
    - laser tracking, ~1,600dpi sensitivity practical max (obviously higher won't be a problem)
    - robust build quality
    - ideally wired / wireless hybrid, but failing that a high-accuracy wireless
    - ideally at least three thumb-accessible controls (for window management)
    - OS X / Windows compatibility. This is not a major deal as a Boot Camping Mac may not end up being my main workstation after all, but I'd like to hedge my bets.
    - on-unit adjustable dpi is a major plus
    - pretty long battery life, or AA alkaline/rechargeable compatibility. I often forget to stick it back on a recharge

Mat being used is primarily the Razer eXactMat, although more Destructors might get a look in.

    What would you recommend?
(I'm thinking Performance MX is my primary compromise)

heh, the orochi fits every bit besides the tilt wheel, sucks that its such a deal-killer for you. I'm using rechargeable AAs in mine atm and I get plenty of charge out of daily use, and you can get even more if, unlike me, you turn off the lights.

MX Revolution pretty much is the mouse with lots of capabilities other than gaming , Performance Mouse 950? it looks nice with the darkfield although i still think that MX Revo is still better .... considering buying another Revo? :D

Part of me is saying 'try the orochi anyway' but I have a graveyard of mice that I've rejected which just get given/thrown away in the end. I'm trying to reduce waste and I'm almost certain that the lack of a tilt wheel will be a fatal blow to the viability of the Razer for me.

Right now as I said, the Performance MX seems to me to be the most logical compromise (although I don't like the microusb charging setup, even though I concede that it's practically more useful. I just like to throw the mouse on a cradle). I'd welcome any other suggestions though.

Plus if you have ever used Logitech support, Razer support looks like complete crap. I have a ton of Razer mouse and Logitech mouse. When Logitech breaks or the even the feet gets worn etc they replace either the mouse completely (they just sent me a new mouse in fact) or they sent replacement feet. Razer basically told me to **** off and find my own...

Razer support has always been helpful to me. I got TWO sets of replacement feet for my DeathAdder when I told them that mine were worn flat and the mouse was grinding on my desk (this was with my old DA 1,800, before I even had the eXactMat).

Can't speak for Razer, but as you say - Logi has been superb.

My friend has the X8. I am not a big fan of the shape. If it was a bit less angular it would have been nice.

most customizable mouse ever. you can actually shape it to fit your hand. one model can go wired/wireless. it runs on 1 AA battery iirc, which comes with it and is rechargeable, I think. and has custom weights.

It's the replacement to the original comedy gaming mouse, the Cyborg II I believe. From the shape of the wheel area, I'd say it's like the original Cyborg - no tilt wheel. Also going by the build quality of every Mad Katz / Saitek peripheral I've bought (I actually managed to rip the entire wheel assembly off one of their steering wheels - and not one of the cheap ones - out of the plastic shell when I was cornering and the Cyborg itself wasn't great shakes but then it was much cheaper than the G9's et al), no thanks.

    Right. I've decided.

    I'm going X8 -> Performance MX.

The X8 is a gaming mouse with the hardware features I want, so it seems to satisfy all of my functional needs. Perhaps I'll have a problem with the shape... if I do, then I'll move to the MX, which I know is a comfortable shape. I might just go ahead and pick up one of each however. I guess this thread was more of a thinking aloud one in the end, but thanks for your inputs anyway.

On the matter of excellent Logi support, my replacement G9x's (they upgraded me) have already shipped. Can't fault them at all, although the G9's have been a bit of a disaster.
