Not sure where I should put this request as it's not really off-topic, and it's not really an accessory.

Anyhow, I'm considering a GPS and am looking at the TomTom One and Garmin StreetPilot C330 or C340.

Anyone have any recommendations or comments / suggestions?

What are some things to consider?

Just FYI - I live in the USA (in Michigan).

I plan on using this mainly for my car, but want some portability. I'm really looking for something rather basic like a compass and basic travel info to get from point A to B with alternate routes if needed/desired. POI's would be nice, but not necessary.

    Thanks.

I own the Garmin C330 and it has never failed me. I remember paying over $500 a couple years ago and now I'm seeing it being sold on amazon for $150 (the refurbished one). I actually purchased the refurbished one for a friend and he loves it! I can't say much about the C340 or any other automotive GPS system since I've never owned any other, but for what it's worth, the C330 is absolutely an amazing deal. The touch-screen controls are easy to navigate with, the voice/sound is crisp clear, and has a bright screen. It also shows where the nearest gas station, restaurants or hotels are too. Basically, the c330 is just a superb GPS system that delivers but without all the bells and whistles the newer systems offers (eg mp3, traffic/weather updates etc).

My family really likes Garmin products. I own a Legend Cx, and I really love it for Geocaching. My mother owns a Nuvi 250W, and it gets her through downtown Nashville with ease.

Why don't you take a look at the Nuvi 250W. It's very nice, and you can find them in the sub 300's. Mom got hers on sale, so you might find one on sale!

Thanks guys. Now that I'm looking, is there a reason I shouldn't go with the nuvi 200w over the 250w?

The only difference is that the 250 and 250W have different screen sizes. The 250W screen is a touchpad, and when dragging the maps around you just see more. That is the only difference. Also, it looks stylish in my mom's 06 Altima! :)

Thanks - but what's the difference between the 2 00w and the 2 50w. Specs at Garmin's site shows them to be identical, except under maps for the 200w it says (Regional). Does this mean it just has less memory?

I think that the maps are different on the devices. The basemaps are major US highways and Interstates. I'm thinking the regional maps are major cities... I could be wrong. I know that the 250 has all maps already loaded.

A little more than I want to spend. Should have indicated less than $300US, preferably less than $250

Most of the major retailers will sell GPS units at prices ranging from $99 to $169. Examples include the Mio C220 ($99 at OfficeMax), the TomTom ONE (at Staples) and the Garmin Nuvi 200 ($169 at BestBuy).

ill throw in my two cents

go with garmin - they really are fantastic units - i have a c340 and that thing has NEVER led me astray - the maps are dead on point (they actually just recently released another map update as well - so if you order, see if you can make sure to get the most recent maps) - and the user interface is by far the most intuitive of any of the major manufacturers

the newer models (i believe the c350 is one) also have this neat "tour guide" feature - i dont know if youre into that (i definitely wish i had it) - but you download tours onto the memory card (there are plenty of free ones online) - it gives you turn by turn directions AND a little bit of history about where you are and what you are seeing - i think thats just an incredible feature

i have a pioneer avic-d3 all in one headunit in my car - it includes its own navigation feature - i find myself sometimes bringing along my garmin on long trips because it is just leaps and bounds ahead of the pioneer...
