Well the title says it all..Basically I don't have a mouse pad and my mouse pad is the Alienware M14x cloth that comes with the laptop so you can imagine the feeling lol. I use a Roccat Pyra Wireless gaming mouse which I'm really enjoying btw, so I prefer to use a Roccat mouse pad for uniformit, other mouse pads (ea Razer) aren't out of the question though so feel free to recommend anything.

Specs or details about what I need are:
    1. Size must be smaller than the size of the M14x so no "King Sized" pads or anything. Then again of course no one wants a pad too small.

    2. Has to have a good "grainy" feel to it and not be slippery. Basically a clothy feel or has some resistance due to the fact I've been using the Alienware cloth as a mouse pad since my M11x R1 days 2 years ago and have grown used to it.

    3. Being rollable/flexible is a plus though willing to consider hard pads since I'll be bringing it around in my bag so not sure if hard pads can be lugged around in a backpack without being damaged.

That's basically it. I know mouse pads are highly subjective to the buyer but I do hope I've provided enough info here for you guys to make recommedations. Right now I'm liking the Roccat Alumic for the looks and the reversable different traction pads and detachable wrist pad. Though I believe this is a hard pad and isn't a pad you'd like to travel a lot with..Personally I don't see any difference with the other Roccat pads so I really don't know what to get. Haven't checked out the Razer pads yet though so any recommendations are welcome.

    Thanks!! :)

Sporting the Razer Goliathus Control Edition for just over 2 years now. Might be what you're looking for. There are also 4 versions of it so you can choose the perfect size.

The Goliathus series are pretty nice. I have the extra-large Speed edition, which is pretty much the exact opposite of what you're looking for. :p

The Vespula is nice as well. It's a hard pad, which you can just slide into your backpack or case next to your laptop. No need to worry about damage. It's got a smooth Speed side and a more textured Control side, and comes with a removable gel wrist pad.

Razer Vespula seems exactly like the Roccat Alumic lol. I like the versitility of having a rough control side and a smooth speed side though the price tag is a little high especially for the Alumic. I have one question though, I use a back pack so a hard pad is more advisable? I kinda though a soft mat was better mobility wise since you could roll it up. I always thought of the hard mats as desktop pads where they don't have to get picked up or moved very often. If that's the case then I'm going with the Alumic lol. Pretty hefty price tag for a mouse pad though. Wife's gonna kill me if she find's out I spent that much money on a mouse pad lol. :D

Personal preference, really. Soft mats can be rolled up, hard mats can be slipped into your bag nice and flat. With a backpack, portability isn't much of an issue for either type, unless you have one of those extra-large mats.

Good luck justifying the purchase to your wife...or just tell her it was $5. ;)

I have a steelseries soft pad that I love. It is pretty large though about the same size as a standard three ring binder. Rolls up small though.

I think a steelseries QCK series variant will suit you just fine. Not very pricey too.

Thanks for the inputs! I've decided to get a Roccat Alumic pad later today. In the end I couldn't choose between a rough control surface or a smooth speed surface to I chose to get both lol. Then I also took to consideration that a hard mat seems to have it's advantages as I remember 1 particular time when I had to play on top of a wooden picnic table which isn't smooth at all. Plus I also want a Roccat pad to go with my Roccat mouse, it's an obsessive compulsive thing. Now the only problem is convincing myself the the pad is worth the price..The thing costs almost as much as another gaming mouse lol

No King Sized pads? Awww guess my recommendation for a Ripper XXL would not have worked out so well :D

I like the Steel Series QCK pads, perfect cloth texture and great durability/quality at a fraction of the cost other brands sell similar stuff for.

I ran into a company called XTracPads when I was looking for a HUGE mouse pad and found the Ripper XXL and after being so pleased with it I got a 2nd product from them the Fat Mat wich is what I use with my laptop because it is the same surface/texture I like but thick rubber that cushions my hand when I rest it on the desk.

Well for an update on the pad, the 2 surfaces really feel different are I have them to be quite useful in terms of type of games you play..The smooth side seems to be better for 3rd person games like assassin's creed or 1st person shooters for quick reaction. The rough side is great for strategy games like warcraft. The wrist rest is pretty big though making it uncomfortable for use while gaming, I use it while browsing though. The pad would be great if the price went DOWN A BIT lol. Didn't get the "cloth" feel I was looking for though..But I guess I'll adjust..If not I'll just have to sell this one and get a kabuto or goliathus control or steelseries qck. But since I have a Roccat mouse, I'm most probably gonna stick with this baby. :D At least I got bragging rights.

Hmmm. The Goliathus is more versatile IMO.

    - Dinner place mat
    - Cat rug
    - Multi-burrito organizer
    - etc

just a normal cloth trackpad seems to work better for me than hard surfaces. steelseries qck is a go-to choice if you want to pick a size
