Gaming Headsets: Razer Megalodon VS. Logitech G35?

Which out of the two headsets are best? Razer Megalodon OR Logitech G35? I will be using it with the laptop in my sig. Let me know what you guys think.

 

Razer is a company that uses a lot of deceptive marketing. There are several examples on their website right now of that practice that I could point out, if you wanted more detail.

I refuse to buy from a company that uses deceptive marketing to sell their products. I would advise you to do the same.

 

Between the two id go for the G35.

The Logitech G35 is excellent, I have not used the Razer model. I have used Steel Series V2 USB and compared it to the G35. The V2 has better sound and is more comfortable, but the virtual surround effect on the V2 is useless. The G35 however uses Dolby Headphone and it provides excellent virtual surround sound.

Comparing the Razer to the G35 for me is easy because the G35 has one clear advantage. PRICE! You can regularly get the G35 for $65-70, but I've never seen the Megalodon below $100. If you watch techbargains.com (and everyone who likes computers should), you can find the G35 on sale every 1-3 months. Normally it is $109-129. Go to techbargains and do a search on the G35 for the last year and you'll see what I mean, then you can setup a deal alert that will email you when it goes on sale again.

The sound on the G35 is good but not excellent. I found the headphones to be slightly uncomfortable over time, but I have a big head. The Pros of the G35 are the virtual surround quality (it is very easy to tell directional cues on this headset), the simlicity of the USB interface, excellent Microphone quality, and price. The cons are you can get better sounding headphones (but none that have Dolby Headphone) and they can be mildly uncomfortable.

I would easy recommend the G35 to anyone who wants a USB virtual surround headset, but only if you pay <$70. If you are going to spend >$100, I would get some Audio Technica ATH-AD700s or ATH-A700 for around $100. They are not virtual surround, but they sound awesome and are very comfortable. One day I hope to buy an external soundcard like the Asus U1 which supports Dolby Headphone so I can use it with my ATH-AD700s.

Don't let this confuse you, the G35 is great, it is simple and very effective for a $70 headset. If you buy something like the ATH-AD700s, you need a microphone and may want an external soundcard if your onboard one sucks (and it probably does). Since the G35 has everything in one package (headphone, mic, and soundcard), it has a simplicity advantage that simply cannot be beat. If you get it you won't be disappointed.

Which is totally untrue. You can easily buy other wireless mice with 1ms latency / 1000Hz polling rates.

Again, totally untrue. The tactile / audio feedback, and actuation force is determined by the type of mechanical switch used. Razer BlackWidow happens to use Cherry MX Blue switches, which are also used by several other keyboards. And not to mention - there are several other keyboards based on the other variants of Cherry MX switches with tactile / audio feedback and actuation force across the board, depending on user preference.

... which is my favorite quote to type on my 4.5lb 11.6" Alienware M11x. Or if that's too heavy, an 11.6" MacBook Air with an nVidia 420M GPU is a little more portable.



Those are just a few examples I happened to run into in the past that triggered my BS alarm. I did not go through the entire Razer site with a fine-toothed comb, so it is not an inclusive list of everything on their website.

I would recommend you check out the Creative Labs 5.1 X-Fi USB SB1090 sound card. It's only about $45-$50, and supports CMSS3D Headphone mode. That is considered one of the better surround sound downmixing algorithms when it comes to portable laptop external sound cards.

I hook that up to my Etymotic ER-4P headphones (also a very detailed, revealing set of headphones like Audio Technica Ax00's), and the surround effect is fantastic.

 

I happened to try both before I used them, and very much preferred the G35- while in terms of sheer sound quality there are several headsets out there that are better, none can match the price, nor do they come with the excellent surround sound of the G35's.

Furthermore,and this was the biggest selling point for me as I travel constantly and as such am on Skype loads, the microphone quality on the Logitech's is absolutely superb- I really did not realize talking to people over the internet could be so lovely.

But that's just my 2 cents- best advice I can give is try both of them! Buy one from a retail store, try it, then take it back if you don't like it, or if you do like it, take it back then order form somewhere online for less. Helps me feel like I'm getting back at Best Buy for being evil tossers....

Have never used Triton before.

I have used Turtle Beach EarForce products before (both the X41 headset and the standalone Earforce DSS DAC + my own headphones), and can say that I did not care for the sound signature at all. The sound seemed very thin, recessed, and un-engaging.

I have also used the Astro A40's before. The good part is that the sound quality is pretty good. Nice, full, rich sound. Clear, in-your-face sound signature adds a visceral quality to your gaming experience. IT's good sound, but I wouldn't say that it's better (or worse) than the Logitech G35 / G90 headset.

The first major drawback to the Astro A40's is pretty expensive for what you get. You definitely pay a price premium for the MixAmp that it comes with. If you will not be daisy-chaining MixAmps for team chat, or mixing in your own music / mp3 player device, then you're paying too much for what you get. The second drawback is that there are wires everywhere, to connect all of the different components.

Unless you have an overwhelming need to specifically buy Astro or Turtle Beach, I'd stick with the Logitech G35's. It's really hard to go wrong with that. Good performance, good build quality, at a very reasonable price.

 

Just a heads up for anyone who's leaning towards the G35. If you have a big head (like me) it may feel a bit too tight. Thankfully the G35 I tested belongs to Baka and I didn't have to buy it for myself

That's my G13. Logitech G35 does come with 3 of those headstrap thingy which you can change to find the best fit for your head though ._.

I guess these marketing techniques aren't that uncommon. The only "fake" thing I'd mention is that their Megasoma mousepad doesn't glow (at least the glow is ~100X less than it was on their web page). Well I guess unless you happen to use it for gaming in one of my labs where we do laser scattering experiments, and hence it's a total dark for all practical purposes. ^^

It feels like you're losing money if you DON'T buy this product. This is a ridiculously low price for an awesome product. Seriously.

 

I agree, if you want a virtual surround headset, the $69 G35 is the way to go.

 

Get the G35 , it's very comfortable even if you wear glasses and the sound is awesome.

 

Also take a look at the new Creative headset that was at CES. Revision3 did a spot on them... The thing I like is the compatibility with xbox, pc and stereo. However I haven't seen them available anywhere yet.

I have a question about the durability of the G35 and its portability. I am a pilot so I spend a lot of time traveling with my bags often getting tossed around. I keep my 15" laptop in a messenger bag with me though. Will the G35's fit the average bag? How susceptible will this be to damaging the headphones?

 

i bought the tritton ax720 so i can switch between my xbox 360 and my laptop i love it! detachable mic and sounds quality is great!

 

I dont want a surround sound only headset. Can you turn off the surround sound and just have voice only?

 

The Logitech G35 has a switch that allows you to turn the surround sound mode on and off behind the left ear cup ._.

 

Has anyone seen anything near the $69 price point that logitech had on 3/5 for the G35s?
