Are they worth buying? Can you even install one on a laptop?

Why do you want? Are not needed. Yes you can use an external sound card. Question again?

To be honest, there really is no point in purchasing a dedicated PCI Express or external USB sound card if you are not going to take advantage of it by hooking up a stereo system to it. There are gaming head sets out there that "support" surround sound but they are very limited in their capabilities when compared to a true gaming stereo set.
To answer your question about whether or not the audio card is worth buying i will say yes: it makes a big difference in quality and flexibility. Especially if upgrading from an on-board laptop audio chip. I just dont know how much of this improvement is going to be exposed through a headset...

I personally would avoid creative, but thats just me. I'd go with a usb/firewire card from m-audio or another company. It just depends on how much you want to spend. And what headphones are you using with it?

If u are looking for a Gaming soundcard then Creative XMOD is good... it has CMSS-3D feature which creates a 3D sound effect.

I hate all those effects for music but for Gaming they work.

Yeah, when I say that I don't like something then I don't like it for music, I don't really game. So for gaming it might be nice, but for music, theres better out there for the money(I have an xmod).
