I suck with a keyboard+mouse. I prefer a controller and already own a PS3 sixaxis controller with a USB cord and was wondering if I can use that to play the following games...
Is there a way to find out if a specific game supports or doesn't support a controller? To avoid problems in the future when buying games?
Should I buy a PC controller (Logitech, or whatever brand is good) or will the PS3 do? Can I configure what each button on the controller does? Will the analogs be supported? Can I use one analog to move the character and the other to control the camera? I think people have been having trouble with the analog sticks...
Just wondering if anyone games with a PS3 controller -- tell me if it's OK and if you have ever occured any problems.
P.S. I know you have to install specific drivers to be able to enable the PS3 controller.
If it's of any importance I'd like to game on an Alienware M15x with my PS3 controller.
Thanks.

i highly recommend a ps3 controller because the ps controllers have always been a great design hence why its copied so much. you will have to install drivers but they are real easy to install. i recommend you use the motion in joy drivers found here.
MotioninJoy | Playstation 3|Xbox 360|Dualshock 3|Sixaxis|Game|Driver|
with these drivers you can add auto fire or macros to any button or axis and can also emulate a wireless 360 controller. so most games for windows if not all game will work if it supports the xinput 360 controller.
out of the list of games you listed i know that these games work with it either normally or by emulating a 360 controller. Ive tested most of those games but some were with older drivers so im not 100% sure but at least 95% sure they would work. if you really want to know if it works with any of these game 100% i can test it out if i own them. of the listed below i Currently have all except for mass effect 2, dead space and sc: conviction installed on my comp.
Mass Effect 1
Mass Effect 2
Dead Space
Batman: Arkham Asylum
Saints Row 2
Splinter Cell: Conviction
Left for Dead 2
even if they dont work if you purchase a software called pinnacle game profiler you can get the controller to work with any game that supports keyboard and mouse (lol). i say this one over free alternatives like xpadder because it the most customizable software ive used.
i do own a large amount of pc games so if you want to know about any other game ill let you know if it works on it or not but remember i dont own them all (wish i did though)

Im using a RumblePad 2 wireless by Logitech to play FIFA 2010 mainly and its great, it recognises the control instantly when i open the games. it does cost $30 though. I would use a PS3 controller as it is better how ever i found it to be too complicated to get the drivers working for it. Unlike the Rumblepad, which is plug and play.

I'm an avid PS3 and PC user. I know that M/Keyboards might be tricky to get used to, but keep at it and you'll be pulling off headshots in no time!
Its funny because console users try ridiculous things and spend a crap load to use a M/K setup lol, guess it works the other way around too. -
I like using the Xbox controller for the PC. Although most of the time I use the M/K for FPS.

what i find funny though is that most people who say you cant play everything with a keyboard like to use the example of super mario bros. incidentally i can play super mario bros just as good if not better on keyboard alone lol. -

Batman Arkham Asylum? I played it with keyboard & mouse just fine and would prefer it that way since it has FPS like controls.
Racing - Controller better than keyboard if its analog but a wheel > controller by far.
I put together a dedicated review & guide for using controllers on laptops/pc you should check it out. - http://forum.notebookreview.com/accessories/497568-ultimate-gamepad-review-guide.html -
