Hi everyone,
I've seen lately that many gaming gear manufacturers sell mice and keyboards with gold plated usb plugs. I know that high-end audio companies use gold plated contacts to improve sound quality because of higher conductivity and therefore better "analog" data transmission.
My question is:
Does this also apply to "digital" data transfer or is this whole "gold plated usb thing" just marketing?
Thanks

As far as I'm concerned it's just marketing. Digital signals either get there, or don't. It's 1s and 0s. The same thing goes for stuff like HDMI cables where a $10 is just as good as the $80 ones.

It is all marketing bs, it is not actually gold. It is a copper and nickel electroplating, which looks like gold. If you dont believe me go to a jewelry store and ask them what gold dust costs. Even most jewelry is not even gold, it is just electroplated with gold, that is why rings discolor. If the ring was pure gold it would not discolor.
If you want cheap hdmi cables you can get them from MPJA, they sell great parts which are at industrial bulk prices.

He's right about the part that it either gets there or it doesn't. No fuzziness, it'l flicker from perfect to nothing.
But there is a tiny tiny difference between the 10 buck ones and the 100+ buck ones.
So negligible though. You'd have to be really really paying attention to the details to notice. Even the most enthusiasts wouldn't care.
