I've always played games on a ps2 or some other type of console and recently i purchased a vostro 1500 and i've started gaming on it a little bit. The only thing is i can't get used to using the keyboard and mouse compared to the controllers i'm used to using. What type of game controller would you guys recommend for FPSs like COD4 and STALKER thats preferably under 30 or 40$ or do you guys not recommend using a game controller at all and just get used to the keyboard and mouse?

If you really want a controller, get the wired 360 controller for PC. I have the wireless one and it works just great. I use it for racing games. -
I like the XBOX 360 wireless controller I never really got into the keyboard and mouse deal (just recently built a computer that can handle more than solitare). I use it for all my games FPS, racing, flying, ect.

I would try and get used to the kb and mouse for shooters, once you are used to it it gets a lot easier.. also you can aim a lot more accurate with a mouse.

After getting a G5, its almost impossible for me to play halo again, the Gamepad is soooooo inaccurate compared to a high dpi mouse.
CoD4 on the 360 is bearable, but I will only do it for my friends' sake. -
I highly recommend the Logitech cordless rumblepad. Its under $35, its extremely rugged and it get phenomenal battery life. I have owned mine for a year and I have been through many a game since acquiring it and i have only just changed the batteries for the first time and it turned out that only one of the batteries was dead. The rumblepad resembles the playstation controllers in terms of design and button layout and fits well in one's hands. It also gets excellent range and it can take a physical beating also.

Yes I agree with Ras, I have had 3 rumblepad IIs. 2 wired and one wireless, they are an excellent product all around, haven't had any trouble with them.

Are you using WASD on the keyboard?
Place your three middle fingers on the A, S, and D keys with your thumb on the space bar.
A is strafe left, D is strafe right, S is backup, and W is go forward.
Using the mouse to look around and these keys to move is the prefered method for playing FPS games.
Most shooters are already setup this way in the config.
Keep using these keys while you play and you will eventually notice that it becomes alot easier. Accuracy will improve over the gamepad a lot.
If you don't want to worry about playing the game while learning start a local multiplayer game on COD4 or something similar and just run around for awhile.
Trust me. This is the best control method around. Just keep at it. -

xbox360 controller is probably the best pc gamepad.
most games that have both pc & console gamers together give auto aim to the controller guys to help make up the handicap. Its very noticeable in halo I hear and due to this many do better with the gamepad actually. -
If you're serious about getting a controller I'm also going to have to throw my vote in for an XBox 360 controller, wired. It'd be handy for whatever games you're looking to play.
To be honest though I would suggest considering getting more used to the standard keyboard/mouse configuration. A little more customizable plus with a decent mouse you can usually peg things a bit more accurately than with a typical gamepad. -
too bad newegg doesn't have a wired xbox 360 contoller for PC

I really can't play FPS on a console anymore now that I have my DeathAdder + keyboard.
-
You'll get yourself owned if the others were using keyboard+mouse and you are using the game controller.

I totally agree with the previous posters that you should put in a little effort to learn how to play FPSes with keyboard + mouse. It's much faster, much more accurate -- the two things you need to pwn in shooters.
If you want to go to gamepad the Xbox360 gaming controller for windows is really good - you can either get a wired one or a wireless one with a little usb dongle thing for the wireless. I just feel this is the comfiest controller by far. ( Little tip, around me the Microsoft gaming controller in the red box, rather than the light green Xbox 360 box is $10 cheaper....)
Good Game Controller for FPSs
