I'm looking to buy a printer for home that a) will last me awhile and b) won't kill me (w/r/t financial cost, of course) on toner/cartridges. Any suggestions?

Also, on the topic of overly-expensive ink cartridges, are refills a viable way to go save money, or does repeated fill-ups of an ink cartridge result in a reduction in print quality?

There are people who swear by refills, others who hate them. I fall into the latter. I just go with a cheap laser (a couple Brother-brand around $50-$60, I have an HL-2040) with cheap toner cartridges that last for ages ($0.01/page)

Brother Laser printer have a quick access cap on the toner cartridge, which allows you to do your own toner refill and the quality of printing is comparable to the HP's BW laser printers.

    I got HL-2040, HL-2140 and HL-2142....

i dont really care about print quality... as long as i dont see streak marks or unreadable text, i stay on the same cartridge

I have a Brother HL2140 Refurb. Using coupon codes etc, you can probably get this down to $30 After rebate(same as what i got). 10000 rated drum life.

then i got third party 2800page extended toner cartridges from Meritline for $15 each .

Total cost - $15*4 + $30 ~ $100 for 10,000 pages, 1 cent a page (or less, prolly can get 3 cartridges, and use the Sticker trick to extend lifespan of toner cartridge

plus free paper after rebate from staples, 1 cent per page is nice :D

a little more for its network capable brother, HL2170W (refurbished available too)
