If you can go a bit over to the $100 range, you can get some really good stuff, like the Logitech Z-2300 or Klipsch ProMedia 2.1.

Would not recommend getting a 2.1 for a dorm room haha. Having a sub is a good way to displease many people.

I have tested my share of 2.1 speakers and here is my expert advice:

Best 2.1 Value for Money - Altec Lansing VS2621. These speakers are amazing. For under $50 the bass is deep from such a small sub and the sound is clean. Problems I have seen with the older models (VS2321) is the control knob has a mic and it picks up interference when a cellphone is placed close to it and receives a call. Design is very stylish with pyramid shaped speakers and gold trim.

Best 2.1 - Logitech Z-2300. Expensive but can really shake a room. Widely regarded as the best 2.1 and I own a pair. Very LOUD and can run from $150 to $200.

I have used the VS2321 and the only issue I found was the cellphone interference. I am getting the VS2621 soon and will let you know if they have the same issue.

Well I just got the Altec Lansing VS2621 and the VS2321 was better. I am going to order a pair of the VS2521 which have the same sized sub and see how that one sounds.
