Is there a budget-friendly backpack good for everyday use (commuting around the city) and carrying a laptop/books for college? It would be nice if the backpack had an adjustable strap on the bottom to make the pack thinner or thicker.

^^ Second that. Orion BP rocks.
I've been using it for a year on a daily basis, first transporting my M17X, and now - the HP 8740w.
    No CONs.

OP, what size lappy do you have? That also makes a difference!

Swiss Gear makes a nice line of laptop backpacks.

I have the Synergy from Swiss Gear for my XPS 1530 & it worked awesome. I would still use it for my XPS 1647 but it makes for a fairly *tight* fit.

Swiss gear is a good option if you are looking for budget friendly backpacks. If you are looking for quality and durability over budget, then laptop backpacks by Briggs & Riley are also worth exploring. They offer good organization, excellent durability, mesh back padding for comfort and lifetime warranty on their backpacks!
