Something like this, only better at cooling. I bought it today and while it feels fantastic on my lap, it does a poor job of cooling my laptop. My loud a*# fan is still running on fullpower.

I know the Zalman cooling pads are excellent but from the looks of it, not exactly lap friendly.

    Recommendations anyone?

cooler master infinity, it does not pull air from the bottom but instead the back so your lap wont impede the airflow and it will have a flat bottom for lap comfort.

Edit: Sorry, I must be suffering from the case of the stupid today. It took me a while to understand what you meant Vicious.

In order to "blow" air it must be "pulled" from somewhere.

95% of the cooling pads out there pull the air from the bottom under the cooling pad, so they are designed to be on a hard flat surface. If you use them in your lap where the legs and cloths are not a hard flat surface they will block the intake vents causing the unit to be little more than a lap desk instead of a cooling pad since there will be no air moving.

This factor alone is the most important for a good cooling pad to be used on the lap I think.

If you read what I said above again, I didnt say anything about how the cooling pad blows the air into the laptop but was rather talking about the place the source air comes from.

Haha yes, I got it, thank you for the explanation though.

One quick question before I purchase. I'm a gamer and from the looks of it, this cooler only has one fan. Is that sufficient enough? Even with proper air distribution it seems like it won't be enough to cool a laptop without being overly loud.

It should not take a lot of airflow to help a laptop cool if it has a good intake.

Infact any laptop performing normally should need no cooler at all to stay at proper temperatures. If it does its not cooling properly.

Its just there to keep fresh cool air under the laptop so it can cool itself, its not really there to "force" air into the laptop, that would be rather hard to do unless it was very high pressure/cfm or it was sealed to the laptop air tight so it could force it in.

The cooling pad is just a good way to keep from blocking the laptops intake vents on the bottom and keep it a bit cooler than it would be normally with its own cooling system working alone. It should not be expected to dramatically reduce temperatures.

One fan is more than enough even if it was just a 120mm fan but the infinity uses a larger than normal fan special to the unit.

For lap use myself I would prefer a good lapdesk to a cooling pad, it will be more comfortable and give me the space I need for accesories like a mouse. On a desk I like a cooling pad just really for the tilt it gives to the laptop making it easier and more ergonomic to type on. However I just use 2 small lifts instead of a cooling pad these days because I noticed in my last 3 laptops the cooling pad was not needed so it was just extra weight and baggage, now I have 2 small $3.00 lifts to tilt it up, and even doing that can help cooling giving it a larger airspace to draw air from when sitting on a desk.

Perhaps you're right. My real reason for getting a cooler in the first place is to make this thing shut up when I'm NOT gaming. It's so loud that I can't hear myself think, let alone manage to get any work done for my job.

In any case thank you for the help, I just purchased the pad and it should arrive tomorrow. Time to go return this piece of junk Targus.

If it was not that loud when it was new, chances are it just needs to be dusted out.

If it was that loud when it was new, sounds like it needed to be returned.
