I just got a T410 thinkpad, and as I expected, the speakers are pretty crappy (not loud, and any more than 35/50 you can start to hear static etc., but I'm not surprised). As I don't have an ipod dock, my laptop is my music station in my room, but it isn't doing very well. So I'm looking for decent speakers that can provide bass and a clean sound for under 60$. Portability isn't too important, the less cables the better but it doesn't need to be pocket sized. I don't want one that requires AC power, I just want one that has a single USB, plug and play is what I'm looking for. I like music to fill my room so I don't really want headphones, unless I just HAVE to get the one that you recommend....
Any suggestions?
If it means anything, I listen to experimental, psychedelic, electronic, and rock music. Not too much hip hop.
EDIT: A/C or a separate power source other than the USB plug isn't a deal breaker, if it really is a huge difference/makes the money more efficient, I'd be ok with it.

Spend more money. Sixty would be the cost of one speaker.

I could go up to 70 if it is a quality speaker. This could work...

USB speakers tend to be very limited with quality and volume. In my opinion, a 3.5mm plug speaker set with a separate power source is well worth the extra cable.
Would you prefer a 2.1 (two speakers + a subwoofer) setup, or two larger speakers? -
Probably a 2.1 set (all in one i'm guessing). Using my 3.5mm socket wouldn't be that bad except it's at a really inconvenient location (right where my mouse rests when I use it. When it's being used the plug sticks out and it keeps getting in the way of my movement). A/C power isn't a deal breaker either, if I can't get enough power from a USB plug I can always go A/C....

A lot of speakers have an L-shaped plug, so hopefully that will alleviate some of the annoyance of the cable being on your mouse's turf.

I Frankensteined a setup since I like building custom DIY car and home audio setups anyway...ended up taking the Klipsch Pro Media 2.1 satellites, an older Technics 100x5 AVR receiver and an 8" Tangband sub/240w plate amp and built the mdf sealed enclosure.
It's an amazing setup that's excellent for movies/music, whatever and can rattle pictures 2 rooms down while maintaining great SQ...
Just an idea for future reference though you could put together a similar/comparable setup for under $200 total no doubt...

Alternatively, I could use my guitar amplifier (Roland Microcube) as my speaker, and I could use the money on some headphones....
The more I think about it the more options/the more confusing it gets.... -
if you want speakers on the go, get headphones. only way to not carry around a small suitcase for a laptop case.
