these seem rather hard to find these days. I know the obus forme bags have a rain guard, which is nice. But can anyone recommend me any good (and preferably cheap) waterproof/rain resistant backpacks for my vostro 1400?

I would check out Motorcycle backpacks. They are light and waterproof. Some even hold laptops.

Well PVC is a plastic. So my guess is that the backpack has a hard plastic bottom.
How waterproof do you want your backpack to be? I mean what do you plan to do with it (just walk out in the rain once and awhile)? Most notebook backpacks (as far as I know) are waterproof. I mean, if you throw it in a river then water is going to get in but if you walk in the rain they resist it pretty well. I own a Heys ePac17 for my 17" Sager and I've had no problems with it (I've walked out in the rain with it a few times).

Most companies such as dell, toshiba, HP, etc. use the Targus notebook backpack bags and just rebrand them.

Check them out at www.targus.com - they have the ones with rain flies, etc.

There are a few brangs out there ... Lowepro make some of the best, though somewhat expensive ... here is a link to their site: -

    http://www.lowepro.com/

One of their range is so waterproof that it would even float with a full set of camera gear in the bag.

Here is also another link to a huge range of waterproof backpacks of various sizes ...

    http://www.nextag.com/waterproof-backpack/search-html

    Hope this helps.
