It's not too expensive and picks up sound even from a good distance away. Feels like I could break it if I dropped it though... -
I have this one, its pretty good:

to actually record the sound on the computer, audacity is a great program.

Do you want a certian kind of microphone?
Me personally I would prefer one like this: http://www.crazypc.com/products/4560.html
Closer to your voice so naturally it can have less background noise and more of what your saying picked up and its a natural mate with a pair of high end headphones on like my AT A-700's that do not have a microphone boom on them.
Basically its the best way to turn your favorite high end headphones into a headset, but you can clip it to your shirt or something too if your not using headphones.
My search found Xoxide has the best price + shipping is cheap. Less than $10 all together - http://www.xoxide.com/zmmic1.html?productid=zmmic1&channelid=FROOG
I need to get one actually soon as I get paid to replace my wally world microphone.
I actually need to get one to replace my cheap wallmat mic I use right now, sad thing is the wallmart mic was about the same price
here is over 100 user reviews - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16836501002
Many people say much better than all the $30+ mics.
Good yet cheap microphone?
