Hi, I just bought a XPS m1730 (still waiting for it) and i wanted to get some headsets for it.. i'll be playing some FPS games on it and listening to some music, my budget is around 200 $ max, maybe a little more.. however i dont want to spend all of it on sound... so my question is:

¿ Should i get some great headsets like the sennheiser PC350, or others u can recommend me (i dont know much about headsets), or great headphones + a clip on mic.. or an external sound card and some decent headsets / headphones + a clip on mic ?

about the sound cards i was thinking in these two:

ExpressCard Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Audio Notebook

    Turtle beach Audio advantage SRM

any advice about headsets, headphones or sound cards will be very appreciated.. thanks

I have the X-Fi Xtreme Notebook Card and I'd say for anyone that enjoys good quality audio, it is a must have. The price isn't too steep for great sound. I basically went with the latter, "external sound card and some decent headsets/ headphones + a clip on mic" I'm literally going to be doing that. Just getting myself some Skull Candy in-ears with an attachable mic. The sound card should amplify decent headphones (as long as they're decent) and work out well. The X-Fi also can be configured for several different speaker settings, including headphones. So really, if you get the card you're set for almost every, if not every, sound system from headphones to external sound systems. While if you just get the Sennheisers, and don't get me wrong I've had 2 Senn's in the past and still use one of them (the only reason I use in-ear's now is because of my huge hair, hah), but you'll only be able to enjoy regular quality sound on your great headset. So what would be the point of getting a great headset anyway?

tl;dr - "external sound card and some decent headsets/headphones + a clip on mic" is my vote/route I'm actually taking myself.

If your going to be talking then maybe some open headphones would suit your needs. Sennheiser builds some great ones. I personally aim for higher equipment though so I'm going to suggest you to the HD595 area. Which are somewhat expensive. If you can deal with closed headphones, then I'd suggest some Ultrasone HFI-780's which you can get for 180$ shipped, mine are on their way. As for sound card, avoid anything from creative right now, their quality is really dying and now they just sell products with marketing rather than having good products. I'm looking at the M-audio Transit for a sound card, or maybe a Corda 2move. Just depends on your price range.
