Just a few interesting articles
Looks Like Intel AND Microsoft are backing up Toshiba's HD-DVD, according to Marketwatch, as well as some mentions of Vista:

Also, two large DVD player manufacturers in China,Amoi Electronics and Sichuan Changhong Electric, have said that they will support HD-DVD as well.

Here is an interesting opinion column by an ARS writer:

Either way, the OD is now just one more thing about my new computer that will soon be outdated....
-
Pretty much LOL
We can always buy an external one..., or a regular one, put it in an enclosure...ughh!!
Nooooo!! My spanking new DVD+-Dual Layer drive! haha -
I'm glad intel and MSFT are going with HD-DVD.
Ever since I read about the new media types I have been in favor of the HD-DVD.
Why might you ask?
Well it doesnt take a rocket scientist to know that using a disc that is very similar to the now dvd will be very cost productive and allow more consumers to better use the technology. Also I'm pretty used to using CDs and DVDs and moving to something thats a thin cartridge like jsut doesnt appeal to me. I really could care less if it could hold more if it costs alot more money.
I mean it looks like dual layer is going to be the most common and thats eitehr 30 gig or 50 gig. 30 gig should be enough to hold most content of HDTV. And again to make this media; it should be alot cheeper then the blue ray.
thats just my opinion; there are alot of people out there that like the soney blue ray. And soney has put out recently some phoney surveys stating how more people prefer blue-ray. But these serveys were biased if you look into them.
What do you guys think?
besides; its going to be alot cheeper to get drives that do HD-DVD then the blue ray. -
After browsing a few forums, there are rumours Dell and Apple are interested in the Blu-Ray but I doubt Dell would be since Microsoft/Intel pretty much can influence Dell...
But Apple would be interesting.. -
I think Sony is on the Blu-Ray bandwagon too...it does seem like HD-DVD has the upper hand from an economic/practicality perspective, and it seems like drive manufacturers would have more incentive to adopt HD-DVD, as the Chinese makers already have...
-
SONY is the one making Blu-Ray aren't they?
-
I believe there are 5 or 6 drive manufacturers involved, as well as several computer manufacturers and media companies...The Blu-Ray Disc Association...
-
i would hope sony is on the Blu-Ray bandwagon since it is there product, Blu-Ray isn't slacking either, EA games and tons of other companies are backing blu-ray, but the competition only means the consumer will be the ones to when out and the companies will lose money to compete on price, yay! business!
-
The new PS3s will have Blu-Ray drives.
-
With M$ and Intel backing HD-DVD I have to say that this is a done deal. You have the world leader s in OSs and processors. Who do you think is going to follow who now? Sony has to back HD-DVD if they want to stay in the pc business.
And with the huge media functionality push by M$ and pc manufactuers and pretty much everyone as PC centered, Sony will lose out. The PS3, as big as it may become just can't stand up against the PC tide. M$ will shove HD-DVD down everyone's throat. -
^equals stupid, i hope everyone realizes that Toshiba and Sony have been working together for along time and don't you remember that Sony, Toshiba, and IBM or building the cell processor for PS3.
Microsoft is powerful but it isn't like it is that big of a ****ing deal anyway, even if sony does lose money (they won't) who cares? i doubt sony gives a toss. Sony is rich *****! -
Microsoft supported DVD+R and DVD-R never really went away. It would be great if they got together to make one format. It will slow the adoption of the technology by having two competing formats like it did with VCRs and DVD burners.
-
Sony isn't rich. If you've been paying attention to any news about sony in the past six months you would know that Sony is hurting bad financially. Games sales are the primary reason they are staying afloat.
But it is too soon to say who will win this "war." (So I disagree with my own words up there) And honestly we'll probably all have special dvd drives that play both Blu-Ray and HD-DVD.
HD-DVD wins round 1 over Blu-Ray?
