    Hi there,
I have a new Dell XPS M1330, and it has an HDMI out that supports both Audio and Video. Well my monitor does not have HDMI in, and I see that they have HDMI-DVI cables for the video, but then I will stuck using the headphone jacks for audio out.

Are there any in-expensive HDMI splitters that will take an HDMI input, and convert it to a DVI and Analog/Digital audio out? Then I could hook up external speakers without using the front headphone jacks.

I have done searches for this, but only come up with very expensive pro equipment.

    EDIT:
I guess something like this might work:
    Home Theater System
I could plug the HDMI into the amp, then use the pass-thru to goto my monitor. But that seems like overkill for this.

Yea, that will work. If you already have some sort of 5.1 decoder you can take the spdif optical output from the earphone jack with a minijack to toshlink optical cable directly to the decoder.

Also looking for something to split my HDMI out to my DVI monitor and have the audio come out there too.

Looking for something around 50-60 bucks, i saw a splitter box for $299, but don't really want to spend that much. Any suggestions? I have some decent computer speakers already i'd like to plug into the HDMI audio, but i suppose i need some sort of D-A conversion?

    thanks!

I have been looking but have not found anything yet. What I am trying to do now is look for a reasonably priced bookshelf stereo system, or computer speakers with HDMI pass through. Then I can have decent speakers with digital output, without having cables sticking out the font of the computer.

Hey CodeMonkeyX, while waiting for my m1330 to arrive, I've been preparing its habitat back at my apartment. so I've been looking at the same thing your asking for here.. an HDMI-in, DVI-out, Audio-out device/splitter.

    I found the following:

    1- http://www.gefen.com/kvm/product.jsp?prod_id=3939#buy
    2- http://www.goyona.com/convertisseur_video_vers_dvi1.htm#CP267
    3- http://www.octavainc.com/HDMI%20distribution amp_splitter 2 port.html

the 3rd device does not have a DVI-out port, it has 2 HDMI-out ports. so it's similar to the pass-thru idea of the system you found.

They are all pricey if you ask me, the 3rd seems to be more reasonably priced, still a lot of dough. considering you just dropped a lot of money on the m1330 itself. anyways, I hope this helps

    Cool links thanks.

I have not found anything yet, I was just posting what I would like to see. Some Home Theatre Amps have HDMI in and HDMI out so you can use the AMP and pass the picture onto the TV. Some a small cheaper speaker system like that would be cool.

I would think that Logitech or Creative will release computer speakers that do that soon enough?

that would be ideal. and Cheap is the key word. I would very much like to make use of the HDMI one cable solution and get a nice video/audio output.. I have no need for a dock, so such a device would be what i'm looking for.

    Panasonic SA-XR70S

That would be perfect if it were a little smaller, and a lot cheaper. :) I could have great sound from desktop and laptop, and use the HDMI pass thru. Hopefully these features will trickle down to the low end soon, especially with HDMI, and HD DVD's becoming popular.

I did something similar when i connected my PS3 to my Dell monitor.

    Video - DVI/HDMI converted cable
    Audio - 3.5mm audio jack --> Red/White RCA Audio
find this cable at radioshack or Fry's

edit : this is the analog solution, not a digital :)
