I posted this in the Asus forum, but I didn't get any responses. I'm hoping that somebody here can help me out.
I need help hooking up a new laptop and monitor. I just bought an Asus U50F and a 23" LG monitor (1920 x 1080 resolution) for my wife to use for her business.
When I hook up the Asus to the monitor through HDMI, the output isn't taking up the whole screen. It only fills about 70% of the screen in a box in the center. When I hook it up with VGA it will fill the screen, but it looks awful.
Can this Asus laptop output 1920 x 1080 via HDMI? Can anyone provide some help for setting this up?
Thank you.

can you go to Screen Resolution(right click on desktop and choose Screen Resolution) and change it manually?

It should work.
In Windows 7:
With the monitor connected, Right click on your desktop and select screen resolution.
Select the Display, should say LG something.
Make sure the Multiple Display is set to Extend desktop to this display.
If that doesn't work try restarting the laptop with the screen connected and close the laptop lid. It should recognize everything fine. -

Its not the resolution its the overscan setting. I thought I answered this in the Asus section? (If not been answering the same question a lot)
if its an ATI card do these steps below, if its Nvidia you need to do the same sort of thing probably but I dont have a Nvidia card to give exact steps.
Make sure you have the output set to the TV only not the TV + LCD.
Go into the ATI CCC and to the displays tab
Right click the TV monitor connection and select properties
Go into the tab for overscan/scaling
Slide it from 30% to 0%
Note if you have this option greyed out for any drivers (nvidia or ati) that it means you probably need to get another set of drivers because the ones you have may not support it because they were modified poorly or not 100% compatible with your system. -
Thanks for the replies. When I try to change the resolution manually, I don't have the option to select a resolution that high. I can't remember what it maxed out at though.
I will try to connect and restart tonight. I will also look into the overscan setting.
The Asus uses Intel graphics, and I think it's the HD HM55.
Thanks again.

Sometimes when the laptop native resolution is different from the external, you need to toggle the laptop screen off and only use external. try pressing Fn+F8 a few times to toggle through the settings. If you run external only it will probably be fine.

Fn+F8 did it. It looks great.
Thanks for everyones help. I really appreciate it.
