I just hooked up an HDMI cable from my laptop to our TV, however all the sound is coming from my laptop speakers. Is there a way to direct the audio to output out of the TV speakers? or do I need a separate cable for that?

No you can use your HDMI cable (they carry both audio and video) To make this work simply right click on the volume icon on your taskbar, then go to playback devices, then select the HDMI audio. Its that easy =D

ah, I did do that. The weird thing was, I had some music playing before plugging in the HDMI cable, but the sound continued to come from my laptop speakers.
It was only after I re-opened the player did I see the audio output onto the TV. Thanks though!

Very normal; it's not like the headphone jack and speakers, HDMI is counted as a separate thing, so nothing is broken. :D

yep.. you have to close any program (VLC) before plugging it in, to make the 'default' HDMI audio come into effect
