Any way to pull this off?
I'm moving to a cable company that bundles both DVR & HDTV into one package...so I'm basically wasting the HDTV since my TV doesn't have HDMI and isn't HDTV resolution either.
However, my TV Tuner for my computer is HDTV capable...if I could find an HDMI to Coax converter. As far as I know HDCP isn't running over the HDMI, but I'm still working to confirm that. Apparently, the cable company knows a lot of TVs are out there that aren't HDCP.
FYI: www.insight-com.com is the homepage for my new cable...

I believe that you feed the coax right into the tuner, and then the tuner (USB, Firewire, whatever) goes into your computer. That's it.
You might need a splitter for the coax coming out of the wall. -
Well, the HDTV that comes in is encoded (and I think it is QAM256)...that means I need the set top box to do the decoding work, and the box only outputs the HDTV over the HDMI. So somehow I've got to keep the box in the loop.

I think no matter what you're gonna need a converter box to go from digital to analog, which will be a fair chunk of change.
I've been trying to figure this out, and you're probably gonna need so many adapters that the picture quality will degrade.
you'll need a cable like this:
http://search.ncix.com/displayproductdetail.php?sku=18134&vpn=HDMI-DVI/D-(18+1)&manufacture=OTHERS
then a box like this:

then a VGA extension:
http://www.infinitecables.com/mon_svga.html
then a box to go to component:

after you go component, I haven't been able to find anything to get it to coax... best of luck. -
There was recently a review for HDTV USB Tuner on NBR. I think modern HD tuners do all the work of the set-top box. I have no experience, so I may be wrong.

It might...IF the set top box encodes the HDTV in ATSC (not QAM as my tuner does not support it).
Even then, no HDTV over the coax on the STB according to Insight...HDMI only. If they are wrong (and they might be) then it is a MUCH easier situation to deal with.
Maybe HDMI->DVI->VGA->RCA->Coax? If there is no HDCP, I could just plug into the DVI or VGA port on my external monitor...
Me thinks I need to call the cable company and find out exactly what connections are on the back of the box as well as which connections are HD and HDCP...
HDMI to Coax?
