    I need some insight.

I'm planing on getting the Apple TV(HDMI) so I can watch Netflix and record the movie with a Hauppauge HD PVR(Component). Are any of the HDMI to Component cables any good? I don't want to lose a ton of quality. The cables seem rather gimmicky and don't seem to have good reviews. Would a converter be any better? Like this: Amazon.com: HDMI to 5 RCA Component AV Converter: Electronics

I don't want to spend anymore money than I have to.

the cables in most cases dont work, you would need the converter and YES you will loose quality in the digital to analog conversion

I might be better off just finding a Netflix compatible machine with Component out.

The core of my home theater and the device that replaced my HTPC is a simple $100 WDTV Live (western digital TV live) I have seen them on sale for as low as $60.00 it does Pandora, Youtube, Netflix, plays any media type from network streaming, or from a connected usb device (flash drive or hard drive)

I have literally about 1.6TB of movies at my fingertips from the connected 2TB HDD and I can send stuff to it via FTP from my computer or watch things from the WDTV over the network as well.

If your looking for a device, this is the one I recommend for many reasons.

So wait. Can hook up my external Hard drive and record the Netflix movies on to the hard drive? Thats all I'm looking for. Being able to stream Netflix and record it so I can watch it anytime without streaming.

No it is not a DVR no recording ability only play ability.

You put stuff on a HDD from your computer, besides I am sure its against the UELA to record netflix so we cant talk about how to do it here.
