Whoa, thats kinda creepy, I would be warey of something like that, i assume you're wanting to connect your notebook to an hdtv right? honestly, while it may be possible, i seriously doubt that the image quality will be too good, that conversion is crossing a couple different lines. The main problem, and pretty much a barrier is that, VGA is a analogue signal, whereas HDMI is digital, and to convert it you're gonna need much more than just a physical connection, so essentially that cable is useless. However, there are signal converter boxes which will do the same thing, but id imagine will be a little costly. Something like one of these should do, however their quality and reliability is anyone's guess.

    or
This little dodad which actually a fairly credible idea, as quite a bit of noise was made about em a while ago, essentially the "USB" Videocards.

in any case good luck, that should be an interesting task ahead of you.

yeah, i have never heard of anything like that and i would be wary of buying it. digital to analogue will also result in a lot of quality loss.

I agree. But for ten bucks, it would be worth a look.

    won't work.
    HDMI is digital, VGA analog!

Such USB solutions are problematic, too. Consume a lot of CPU power, don't support high resolutions, and video playback is on most of the devices impossible.

You need an active converter. I don't know a HDMI to VGA converter, only a VGA to DVI (HDMI) converter, this would be the Aten VC-160. There are many other converters out there. But don't expect to get one for 10 USD :)

Is it an active converter, or just a cable?
Does it really support a PC in (not only VGA in), have you tried different resolutions, different refresh rate. What does your manual say?

If the input you are trying to attach to is Component Video (usually labeled Y Pb Pr, sometimes labeled Y Cb Cr) the VGA output is not compatible. VGA is RGB(HV).

If that's the case, you need to set the laptop to output COmponent video on that interface instead.

If your laptop has DVI and your display has HDMI, you can use a passive DVI to HDMI cable.

Are you sure you dont have VGA on your tv? if its an hdtv you should have vga, if it doesn't then youre prolly looking at a really low res image on the screen very difficult to read in most cases, if its an old style TV the possiblities are there, but quality is still gonna be very bad. Your best bet is gonna be to look for an S-Video connection on your laptop, most laptops have those standard, usually black, looks like an oldstyle mouse PS/2 port. run that straight to your tv or use an S-Video to RCA adapter, or even get one of those Game adaptors for your tv that convert straight to Coax. Once again i stress your mileage may vary, and dont expect anything above decent qality for S-Video and below. definitely not for gaming, decent for video, but most commonly used for powerpoint presentations from afar and with LARGE text to compensate for overall poorness in video quality. sorry to lay it on rough, but when it comes to scenarios like this there's really no other way to put it. Either way good luck and have fun.

You can go from HDMI (or DVI) into VGA or RCA but it requires more than just an adapter cable, you need an actual converter box to decode the digital signal and then send it back out as an analog signal.

Your talking big $$$ for one of them that is half way decent.

It was like $33 just for my VGA --> Composite adapter and thats a cheap one.

Depending on your situation you may have better options, if not I recommend seeing if monoprice.com has what you need they have the cheapest good quality goods like that.

why would anyone wants a HDMI to RCA/VGA? The picture or video quality would suck.
