I have always wondered this: if i plug a computer into a monitor through an hdmi cable, does it look better than if i plug a computer into a monitor through dvi?
-
no difference they use the exact same digital video signals
-
I believe they are exactly the same, except that DVI has better shielding and therefore the signal can travel longer distances without degrading. But that's inconsequential for most purposes.
So the short answer is no. -
As above posters said, there is no difference in picture quality. The only difference between the two is the HDMI will also carry sound, while DVI will not.
-
shielding is no better in HDMI for most decent cables, and yes HDMI can transport digital audio signals
-
alrighty. i will stick with a dvi cable then (my monitor doesnt have speakers anyway)
-
Pretty sure the newer revisions of HDMI (versions 1.2, 1.3, etc) can carry higher color depth and higher res signals than DVI. However, if you are using standard colordepth and 1080p/60hz or lower, you shouldn't see any difference either way.

HDMI carries sound but in most cases for computer applications that is not important or actually has the opposite of the desired effect.
My computer has the habit of sending sound via HDMI on its own to my HDTV when I watch a movie on it rather than send the sound out via the soundcard to my surround sound system.
Computer monitors have no speakers or really bad ones, and most HDTV speakers are not much better. So HDMI in my opinion is only useful in home theater applications where you route to your receiver that supports HDMI first and then from there to your video device. Or sometimes the reverse to the TV first and use the TV output to go to the sound device.
